Switching from Engineering to L&S...

I was admitted as a bioengineering major for the fall and am now considering switching to L&S. How hard is this to do, and can I do it before the fall? I figured it might be easier since bioengineering is a more in-demand major...

a matter of paperwork. unless youre entirely sure at the this point, it doesnt hurt to wait a few months before you do this since it's easier to go one way over the other. in lns you dont formally declare your major until the end of your sophomore yr., so switching into a lns major before then means you are a "intended" major. declaring is also a matter of paperwork, except for impacted major such as econ where there are gpa requirements

i'm fairly sure. i'm going to consider it a little more but i'm not even sure why i chose bioengineering in the first place. i think an actual biology major would suit me much better. so you do think that it's possible then?

Yeah shouldn't be too hard to switch over to L&S. You could probably do it now or later. Sometime first semester would probably be best.

How about the opposite. Switching from L&S (undeclared) to Engineering (Industrial engineering, specifically)?

yeah, don't major in bioE unless you really like the subject.

if you want to switch into CoE from LnS, there are GPA requirements. Email a student affairs adviser for the details: http://coe.berkeley.edu (click current students -> advising)

"How about the opposite. Switching from L&S (undeclared) to Engineering (Industrial engineering, specifically)?"

A friend of mine switched from L&S (undeclared) to COE (IEOR) without much difficulty. He stayed in L&S for his first year and maintained a 3.7 GPA, which shouldn't be impossible to do.

does anyone know if you can switch before the fall. i'm almost positive i'd rather be in L&S...

wlidnar, I would tell you to think long and hard over this decision. I can only imagine the undergrad BioE program would become better and better with the newly built BioE facility.

Typically students are required in stay at least one semester in their college before they are able to make a switch to another college.

Agreed. Besides, you'll be taking almost the same lower division classes in L&S anyway.

k thanks, that's reassuring. i was thinking that i would be taking entirely different classes than L&S. i'll try it out for a semester, since i think they'll make me do that anyways.
