Switching from impacted major to another impacted major?

I've been admitted to Microbiology in the school of biological sciences, which is an impacted major. How easy/difficult is it for me to switch to Mechanical Engineering, which is also an impacted major?

I know that switching into an impacted major from the outside is very difficult, but that, at least within departments, switching between impacted majors is not difficult. So...any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Pretty sure the difficulty does not matter, even within the department (with the exception to Biology).

I’m not sure how mechanical engineering works. I know that Bio admits based on completion of lower division requirements AND overall GPA. I would actually email or visit the department for more information (plus if ME is really your passion, take another engineering major for the time being… at least for the first two years. The lower division requirements are almost identical between engineering majors).

Best of luck.

Hmm… I see. I actually just emailed one of the advisers for the MAE department, but I got a standard copy/pasted response straight off the UCSD website -_- so much for academic advising. So if I were to transfer into electrical engineering right when school started…how much of a shot would I have? Do you know how many transfers they take each year?

Is there a reason for the change?

Also, you should call and try to switch during orientation as well.

At the time when I was submitting the application (last November), I was debating between a career in medicine or one in engineering. I selected microbiology as the primary major and electrical engineering as the alternate, because I believed that I probably would not have any shot at microbio, but could probably get in for electricalE.

Recently, I have decided that I would rather pursue engineering, and I am trying to keep my options open as to what field I would like to enter (Between electrical and mechanical) and not be boxed into a field that I do not want to pursue.
Should I try to switch at the orientation itself?
