Switching from L&S to Engineering?

Hey guys so Im going to davis and could not be more happy!

I applied for undeclared physical sciences thinking about doing computer science or something but i recently really got into the hardwar part of computers and was hoping to swith to electrical engineering. Does anyone know how difficult this is going to be? also exactly what classes should I sign up for so I can switch as easy as possible? thanks!

You’ll need to take the prerequisite courses first before you can switch to the College of Engineering. http://engineering.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/advising/answers.html#a1 (of utmost importance is #5)

will i be able to complete these courses after my first year? will i be able to submit the change of college request by the end of my first year? It says on the davis web site that i need approval of the adviser of my current major and the approval of the dean of the engineering college. Are they usually lenient on who they let transfer? is it based on how impacted the major is? is there a chance that even if i have completed everything i needed to complete and have a great gpa that I will still not be able to make the switch?

You can get PHY 9A, CHE 2A, and MAT 21A out of the way in fall quarter (by the way, you need to take the chemistry and math placement exams to get into CHE 2A and MAT 21A. I believe both are online; information on the math placement test can be found here and information on the chemistry placement test can be found here. Since you need to have completed 21A, B, and C before you can apply to change your major into the College of Engineering, and it would take you a full school year to complete the course, you wouldn’t be able to apply to change majors until your second year.

I am not in the College of Engineering, but I believe as long as you fulfill the requirements, you’re good to go. It’s MUCH easier to switch into a different major/college than the one you were accepted to once you’re actually a UCD student. I have never heard of anyone not getting their major change request fulfilled without a good reason (such as a low GPA–you can’t switch majors if your GPA is below 2.0).

oh ok thank you!

Actually, Math 21A/B are prerequisites for Physics 9A. Your options are to skip to Math 21c through AP exams, take Physics 9A in the Spring, or skip to Math 21b through AP exams and take Physics 9HA in the fall. But regardless, it’s definitely possible to finish the engineering requirements by the end of your first year.

cant i take:
1st quarter: math 21 A + chem 2A
2nd: Math 21 B
3rd: Math 21 C + phy 9A

they dont allow you to use AP cred for engineers/physical science majors… I have AP english + gov + Environmental sci to use for electives/ pre reqs

I’m not sure what you mean here. AP tests can be used for any major. They just don’t count towards GEs.

And yeah, that’s definitely a doable schedule your first year. If you’re not taking Chem 2b, you could take 2a in the winter to lighten up your load in the fall. But the way you have it is completely fine, and if you do end up needing 2b it will be good to have started the sequence in the fall.

The only things those APs are good for is general credits and possibly some prereqs for higher classes in those fields which can be good if you want to take more classes. The credits are really good for your pass time (the time when you can pick your classes relative to everyone else) because more credits means you pick earlier. For example, I had 11 APs and I now have a pass time 2 days before most people in my grade.
