Switching from Regular Decision to Early Decision II past deadline??

Ok so Vandy has been my dream school for a long time and I always planned on applying ED, but my parents and peers all scared me out of applying to any college ED. I applied RD to Vandy but now I'm really regretting it...the ED deadline was January 1, and the RD deadline was Jan 3. Is it too late to switch from RD to ED? I tried calling, but their office doesn't open until Monday.

It’s almost certainly too late but you might as well call on Monday and ask.

Why is it almost certainly too late? I understand deadlines are deadlines, but they have all my info and it’s only been a little over a week. All they’re missing is the ED agreement. Applications had to be postmarked by Jan 3, so doesn’t that mean they could still be receiving applications from obscure parts of the country by mail?

No harm in trying, but I doubt they’ll accept it. I don’t think this is a situation they’d sympathize with plus they’d sort of be slapping those kids who got their stuff done on time in the face if they made an exception for you. Deadlines are deadlines.

It never hurts to ask

Call and ask and let us know how it goes.

Financial aid forms are due earlier for EDII kids.

thanks for your replies, does anyone know if it’s even possible, though? Like would their systems allow them to make the switch for me? I have the ED agreement ready, all I need to do is fax it over. I plan on calling tomorrow and bringing on the waterworks, if needed…hopefully somehow I can get them to sympathize with me hehe, because this is REALLY stressing me out

I have some information that may help…

I applied RD but switched to EDII on the deadline date for EDII. I asked my admissions associate when the latest date I could switch would be, and she said that I could switch up until the few days before EDII decisions get sent out. Meaning, the only difference is that the decision would change to a binding decision and you’d hear earlier (feb, not april).

What I’m trying to say is that if you switch now, you won’t get the 10% more likely admission rate. You’ll likely have the same chance, it’s just your decision will be binding. If you’ve already submitted your application a long time ago (ie. a month ago) then they may have already reviewed it and nothing will come of this switch - except that you’ll be obligated to attend (if admitted). Hope this helps!

thanks so much for your reply f4ngs! that makes me feel a lot better that they’re willing to make the switch past the deadline. I sent in my application on December 31, so I doubt they’ve reviewed it yet…so hopefully I’ll still get that 10% increase in chances, although I doubt it. When did you send in your application? did the admissions person say an application sent past the deadline wouldn’t get the ED bump period or did she say just applications that switched to ED after they had been reviewed wouldn’t get it?

Why change at this point? F4ng makes clear that you are unlikely to gain an advantage in admissions at this point. The only difference is that you would be obligating yourself to attend if accepted.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I would think an adcom would see a change to EDII at this point as a blatant attempt to game the system by someone who clearly did not have Vandy as his top choice (whether or not this is actually the case). It makes you appear indecisive and wishy-washy.

^^ I completely agree

Situation last year: child applied RD to Vandy and it took awhile to arrange alumni interviews. After interviews, child become amazed and enthusiastic about Vandy and decides to switch to EDII, but after EDII deadline. He calls up and asks if he could switch, as everything he has learned new makes him want to go to Vandy. Vandy rep calls back and says complete the EDII agreement and there will be no problem. EDII Agreement completed two weeks after EDII deadline. Accepted. There was no issue and no sense of anyone “gaming” the system.

That doesn’t make any sense. If you switch to EDII, then the school is your first choice. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

How? If you switch to EDII, you are much more resolved about where you want to go for college than anyone doing RD.

@Philovitist - if the EDII school is truly your first choice, then why did you submit the application RD?

From the adcom’s perspective, what could have changed the applicant’s mind? Perhaps it was a positive influence such as the interview mentioned by kellybkk or other new information. However, it is far more likely that the applicant has since received denied responses from other colleges that were not to his/her liking. Perhaps the student has reviewed application statistics and started to panic about being admitted anywhere. There are simply far more negative stimuli that can impact the mind of an adolescent to act than positives in a short time frame.

EDII is generally considered a chance to clearly state your second choice school (after being rejected/deferred from your true first choice EDI or SCEA). Of course, there are some who procrastinated or took a while to make up their mind but these are the minority in highly selective admissions. By missing the deadline for EDII, it is an indication that Vandy might or might not be the second choice but the applicant didn’t have a clear picture of priorities when mid-December rolled around and now is scrambling.

You should have no problem calling the admissions team and switching from RD to EDII as long as you do it as soon as possible and you provide them with the ED Agreement. Make sure to explain the reason you want to switch and they should be able to do it.
In my personal experience with the admissions team, they have been patient and understanding and I am sure they will be for you too.
Best of luck!

wow tough crowd!! heheh just kidding, but thanks for everyone’s response, i got an email back from admissions and they let me make the switch without a problem, as long as i send in the ED agreement. they’re going to look at my application just like all the other ED applications, and they were really, really, really nice about it. and as for my motives…if im applying there ED doesn’t it have to be my top choice? there’s no dark backstory, i just wanna go to vandy!
