I am currently in regular algebra 2 but would like to take Honors precalc/trig next year. I am aware that the curriculum of the honors track is different and more rigorous than a regular class, and I’ve heard the precalculus is a difficult class even without honors. I took Honors geometry and Honors algebra 1 previously, and I would really like to get back on the honors track if at all possible. I got an A+ in algebra 2 first semester due to extra credit and an A+ on the final exam as well (without extra credit). Would it be feasible to switch to honors due to the curriculum difference and would I be set back having not taking Honors algebra 2? If I stayed in regular, would I be behind when it comes to AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC the following year?
This all depends on your school. Talk to your counselor or math teacher.
Thank you. I have spoken to my guidance counselor about this and he said that my grades would allow me to switch, but I’m still debating the curriculum gap or any missed material.
Why did you move down?
Honors geometry last year was frustrating and difficult for me. My grades weren’t as good as I had hoped (a B first semester and a B+ second - but at the time I had never gotten a class grade lower than an A) and I assumed that high school math would just continue to get harder. In retrospect, I think it had more to do with the fact that I definitely more of an “algebra person” than a “geometry person” anyway and that my teacher had never taught geometry before, which wasn’t helpful.
