switching grade option

is there a deadline that we have to decide by whether we are taking a course pass/np or letter graded?

Yes. If you want to go from letter graded to P/NP, you have until March 24. If you want to go from P/NP to letter graded, you have until February 17.

I highly recommend you make use of http://registrar.berkeley.edu so you don't have to bother with CC and wait for a response.

They have all the dates on there. It's important to consult your individual college as well.

Oh woa. You can choose which kind of grading system you want?? How come everyone wouldn't go P/NP?

it's all in the fine print...........required courses......maximum number.

Because there are a large number of restrictions as to how many P/NP classes you can take to graduate. For example, you can rarely take P/NP classes and have them count for your major, except for certain classes that are only taught P/NP.

The colleges require a maximum amount of units that can be taken P/NP. For example, Letters and Sciences will only count at most 1/3 of your total minimum units as P/NP. Once you exceed 1/3, they count it towards graduation.

And as sakky pointed out, most majors will not accept P/NP. Some make take one or two, but that's usually the most they will take. Political Science will not take any classes P/NP.

And the third reason is for graduate/professional school. Graduate/professional schools prefer to see a GPA instead of P/NP's.
