Switching into engineering

When I was applying I was stupid to apply for biochemistry. Now I change my mind and want to apply for engineering. I’m not sure when to fill out the LEP application and what the difference between university ID and Director ID is and both are required on the application. I’m also thinking about taking summer classes so what are some good recommendations for summer classes. My parents worked at college park so I get tuition remission and I can live and eat at home so summer classes will be relatively cheap.

@DDOuser - You can call admissions, to see if you can get in now, but it’s a pretty safe bet that the Engineering LEP is full. Also, UMD is currently on Spring Break .

Here are 2 links. One for LEPs in general and one for the Engineering LEP

I suppose I could be patient about applying. But I need to know what summer classes would be good to take.

I’m not really familiar with the engineering curriculum at UMD. Maybe @maryversity can provide some answers.

Engineering is one of the easier LEP’s to get into since a lot of people drop out (at least this is what I was told when I visited UMD). You may have to wait until after first semester or something to transfer in but I’m not sure. Taking math classes over the summer might be a good idea but I’d double check with someone at the school. Your university ID is the thing on the bottom of the admission letter and you can get your directory ID by filling this out https://identity.umd.edu/id/newuser

Hi. You should ask to have your application reviewed by engineering before you matriculate (asap) as you would like to change your major. In the event that you are not admitted to engineering, here is the link describing the “gateway” classes you need http://www.eng.umd.edu/advising/transfer-guide (so basically ENGL 101, MATH 141, PHYS 161, and CHEM 135). Note that you have to either have AP credit for MATH140 or take 140 as a prereq for 141, so the score on your math placement test and AP credit will determine what math you should take. Here is the AP credit transfer guide http://www.umd.edu/catalog/attachments/AP.pdf.

I’m not sure what discipline of engineering you would prefer if you were originally going for biochemistry, but here are the four year academic plans for both bioengineering and for chemical engineering

Yeah that makes sense that I should apply as soon as possible. I have 5 on AP calc ab, 4 oh physics mech, and 3 on chem. I’m taking differential equations GT and AP calc BC this year. Btw could you clarify something. Does http://www.transfercredit.umd.edu/APGenEd.pdf apply only for general education? According to the GenEd pdf I can get BSCI106 as long as I get a 4 on AP bio which I did but on the catalog source you gave my 4 wouldn’t be able to give me credit for BSCI106.

That would be a good question for admitted student day because I saw what you mean about one saying BSCI106 and the other saying just a lower level elective. I’m not sure which is the most up-to-date. As for “only for general education” credit, it actually does double count. If you choose a discipline in engineering that requires a specific class that is on the gen ed list, one class potentially fulfills both the gen ed req and departmental requirement.
