Switching into LSA...

Back in fall, I applied to the college of engineering, and was accepted in october at some point. Over the course of this school year, however, my goals have changed and I want to major in math or a science, but through LSA rather than engineering. I have heard from several sources that you have to wait a year to switch into a different academic unit.

I have a couple questions for anyone who might know the answers:

Is it true that I have to wait a year, and that there is nothing I can do? Do I have to take first year engineering classes if I am in the college of engineering, even if I want to switch into LSA? I have orientation and class selection coming up this summer, and will I be able to register for classes that I will need for a degree through LSA or will I have to stick with engineering courses?

Since I am interested in an honors concentration in math, I don't mind the math or physics requirements for first year engineering students, and I got a 5 on AP chemistry so I think that requirement will be satisfied, but I don't really want to take eng 100 or the other further requirements of the college of engineering, since I plan on switching out.

Any response is greatly appreciated, although one from someone who has actually switched academic units at UM would be especially helpful.

switching into LSA is automatic

It isn't very hard to switch to LSA...just talk with someone from LSA. They might just tell you to take all LSA classes and at the end of the year you sign a piece of paper and are now LSA.

LSA is like the "base" of all schools. You can go from anything back into the LSA.

It is not difficult at all to switch to LSA, my friend did it easily. However she did it after she complete her freshman year (i think she only had to take 1 engineering class a semester tho, so not a big deal).

Even if you somehow did have difficulty switching into LSA, there's nothing to stop you from only taking LSA courses.
