Hey guys, I just have a quick question.

Since Econ is in the College of L&S, is it possible to transfer to UCB as (say a Psych major) but then switch to Econ once you get there since it is in the same college?

If I had all the Econ prereqs done and way above minimum GPA would this be a possibility? Could I just begin my first semester and declare as an Econ major?

I know I haven't been admitted yet (another 2 more months of waiting lol), but I would like to know if I have this option or not if/when I get admitted.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks guys.

I like to say yes
but you should check :o

Well I just graduated in December but from my own personal experience, it is definitely possible to switch majors in Cal - I switched major three times lol. The only issue that can hold you back is… well… $$. Switching majors usually mean that you have to do things all over again, sometimes it also means going through the weeder courses again cringe, which can delay your graduation time. Tuition for in-state is decent but most of the $ you need is on housing - Berkeley has some really expensive housing unless you look far or on low quality housing.

When you switch, the college of L&S requires you to fill out a major declaration form and a program planning form that lists the planned classes you are taking and your intended graduation date. If you applied for transfer as a Psych major but wish to switch to Econ afterwards, you would definitely need to prepare a good reason so that you can convince the advisers to sign your forms. If you already have the Econ prereqs done then there shouldn’t be a lot of problem on switching, unless the college now holds a much tougher policy on transfers.

Really, don’t sweat too much about changing majors - Cal knows that people change their mind all the time, especially with the size of the school. I think about 20 to 30 students fall into academic probation and get dismissed every semester @ Cal but the college gives you a chance to come back with a new major though. Just work hard, don’t slack too much and you should be fine.

I’m not in L&S but from most of my friends, I get the impression that it’s relatively easy switching majors within L&S so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I definitely appreciate it!

@ stressedBear: Thanks for all that personal information! Yeah, I know switching majors can be costly, but I’m fortunate enough to have all but 1 prereq done by this fall. I go to a community college, so I can take the courses cheaply and relatively easily. By the time I enter Berkeley in the fall, if I am admitted, I’ll be nearly done with my prereqs.

I’m assuming that as long as I take that last prereq in the fall I’ll be able to declare Econ that same semester, right? As you mentioned above, since I’ll have the prereqs done, aside from 1 that I’ll be doing in the fall, I don’t think I should have a problem switching.

Do any of you guys know of anybody that has switched into an impacted major in L&S like Econ after they transferred?
