switching major to architecture ? please help

A friend of mine is majoring in computer engineering. She surely doesn't want to continue and most likely switching to a different major. I mentioned civil engineering as its less demanding major in my perspective at least, still hard though. She randomly thought about architecture as art was her favourite subject and she is very good at it. In addition, she enjoys doing projects etc.

could some one tell me what does an arch majors do in college in terms of the class they take. Like for example, design projects, few physics and calculus etc. And also from your experience is it fun or bad/non stop all nighters.

PS: Architecture majors must take a masters degree? as thats what I was told :S

Thank you,

architecture majors who are in a 5 yr program don’t have to go for their masters, but yes, if you have a 4 yr BS/BA in architecture, you do have to go for your masters.

architecture is however, just as challenging, as any major in college, if not more. you hear of archies staying up all night and that the lights in the architecture buildings never get turned off. While this may be a little exaggeration, it is not far from the truth, and usually students need a passion in architecture to continue doing it. I have been told however, if you have great time management that you don’t have to pull all-nighters (or at least much less).

as far as class, every semester there is a design/studio class which accounts for twice the credit of a normal class because it meets in 4 hr blocks usually. there are also arch. history classes, structure classes, usually calc 1 and 2 and basic mechanical physics.

Thanks Hawkswim09,

But isn’t it more fun working on a project all night then doing a thesis or something, or is it just as worse?

i have yet to take a studio class as i will be an incoming freshmen.

however, this was one part of my decision to start in architecture. rather than spending all night trying to solve a physics structural issue or writing a 10 page term paper, i would much rather be working on a drawing or model. plus, who likes studying for finals? in architecture, you just have a final project…much easier and more enjoyable.

so yes, if architecture is for you, you will not mind spending a lot of time on it, because in the end, it is just fun!

no offense hawkswim but you are entirely wrong. especially about the easy part.

but it is fine since you havent even started yet. =P

I was just trying to say that I find it a lot more interesting (easy was not the right word choice - good thing I am not going into english…lol) to work on a final project like designing a project than having to write continuous term papers (although I know that there are art history classes required).

but other than that where am I mistaken? - If you love architecture, you don’t mind doing final projects over something like finals and don’t mind working at it, because at the end of the day, if you like what you are doing, then it really isn’t work.
