So, like many of you, I'm applying to Cornell. I'm planning on going to the CAS (if I am accepted) and I want to study the major Chemistry and Chemical Biology. However, I have more experience (in terms of extracurriculars and what I study in my spare time) with Mathematics. I noticed both Chemistry and Chemical Biology and Mathematics are under CAS. So, suppose I were to get accepted to CAS as a Math major but then wanted to switch to Chemistry and Chemical Biology, would that be a hassle/trouble?? I feel I can write more about Maths since I have done more with it than Chemistry and Chemical Biology.

it would probably be better to write about your interest in both since CAS is a liberal arts school and is designed for people with varying interests

Ah the major you put down on the application for cas isn’t binding in the slightest and I’m pretty sure you aren’t even put in a major initially, and that you at some point later have to declare one which can be anything provided you meet its requirements for declaring. I’m in engineering though so I’m not entirely sure on how cas works, but I’m guessing that’s how it works.

Once you’re in CAS, changing majors is no trouble. You’re not even officially in a major until you declare one as a sophomore. Before you arrive as a freshman, they’ll even send you an e-mail over the summer asking if your major preferences have changed, either to a new subject or to undecided. I applied as an English major and have since switched to Psychology, and could easily change my mind again if I wanted to. It just gets a little tricky after you declare your major in sophomore year, because you have to make sure you have enough time to fulfill your new requirements, etc.

So, apply as either major and know that you’re not committing to it, and you can easily switch to the other once you get here.
