Switching major?

Hi.
My current intended major is Chemical engineering.
If i want to change my major to some other major, can i do it?
For example, from ChemE to Biomedical Engineering.

During your freshman year you can.

If you have a high 1500’s SAT w/o writing then you may be able to do a major change during your summer orientation. The earlier you try the better because space tends to be very tight so this would require some luck. Otherwise, BME only takes Fall admits so you’ll have to maintain a high GPA through Freshmen year. From what I’ve seen, there are a handful of people that transfer out of BME so there should be room for you by sophomore year if your GPA is good enough.

There’s some useful info here: [Internal Transfer - Application and Information - Cockrell School of Engineering](<a href=“Undergraduate Education”>Undergraduate Education)

Make sure that during orientation you tell your adviser of your plans so she can help you pick your schedule accordingly. But first, make sure that transferring into BME is what you really want to do. Most BME’s go to grad school before they can get a BME job and the job market for BME’s isn’t really great in Texas so you may end up having to move out of state. On the other hand, some companies look for anyone with an engineering degree and you may end up working as a general engineer. Many BME’s also matriculate into med school but unless you absolutely love BME this isn’t exactly the wisest route to becoming a doctor. I’m not trying to turn you off but I can’t tell you how many people just picked a major that sounded “nice” when they applied only to go 1, 2 or more semesters down that path before realizing it wasn’t for them (me included).
BME is a healthy and growing program here and the courses can be quite rewarding. If this leads you on to more specific questions, I’d call a BME adviser. Their numbers can be found here:
[Department Staff - Department of Biomedical Engineering - University of Texas at Austin](<a href=“Staff Directory - Department of Biomedical Engineering”>Staff Directory - Department of Biomedical Engineering)

They’re friendly people and know their stuff. I’m not in BME myself but the advisers I have talked to have been very helpful and I’m sure the BME advisers are too. Just make sure to get past the front desk assistant if that’s who you get. I’ve gotten weak and sometimes flat out wrong information from them before (they’re just students). It may be better to email the advisers so that they can answer at their own convenience though. I’d also wait until May to talk to them because they are swamped with registration work until then.

Good luck, and Hook 'em
