So I was accepted to LAS under the Chemistry specialized curriculum major and was wondering how difficult it would be if I had wanted to transfer into the following majors:

Chemical Engineering

Biochemistry (Specialized Curriculum)

Biology (Molecular and Cellular)

Just wondering in case I end up disliking chem.. Thanks!

well, chemE is close to chemistry, so u can switch anytime & just catch up a few courses may be. In fact, all engineering, physics, or chemistry majors are almost the same at every school in the 1st 2 years. u have to do math thru calc to like diffEq, physics me hanic to quantum, genEds, and a few electives

Check and find out the requirements to switch. Sometimes it is “criterion” based (i.e. you get this grade point and you are in), other times it is quota based (we’ll take the top 2% of the people who apply to switch) which makes it extremely competitive. You need to find this out because engineering is a completely different college from LAS, so it is like reapplying to the university again in many ways. U of I does not make it that easy for students to switch majors.

I have noticed looking into the curriculum of the different majors that a lot of the classes that they take are the same. Tthanks!

I asked my brother as he is at UIUC and was in LAS and he said it was quite easy to switch between majors within the college. ChemE is actually in LAS not in ENG. Thanks however I did not know or have heard about the “criterions”

ChemE remains in LAS because that’s historically where it originated, but it is an Engineering curriculum and taught by Engineering Faculty. There are no criteria from year to year per se, as admittance depends on having successfully (Check minimum grade and GPA reqs) completed the courses that students in ChemE would have had to complete their first two years, and then your admittance depends on how many slots have opened up, and your competition for the available slots in the term you are requesting entrance. Transfer into the ChemE program, although within LAS, should not be considered an “easy” intra-college transfer by any means, as you are ostensibly transferring into Engineering from LAS.
