switching major

I got accepted to school of art and school of design but I want to take architecture class. Is it possible to change major(school of architecture was my 2nd choice but i didn't make it)after I enroll CMU?
Architecture was what i wanted to do. I also want to know that if i decide to go to school of design, is it okay to take an architecture classes as a minor?

I know changing major at CMU requires a whole new application process, so you will be considered as a new transfer applicant when you change your major (meaning you will be competing with other high school kids or external transfer students). I think you may take architecture classes as electives (not many though, 70% of cfa curri is required courses), but you will get BFA not BArch: Bachelor of Architecture, which most of architecture jobs require. I am in Architecture major in other college (trying to transfer to CMU) and BArch needs 5 years to complete. its better to start from the beginning (money, intensity of study), if you really want the major.

You will NOT be competing with high school kids nor external transfers. Internal transfers at CMU are based on space and GPA but only compared with other CMU internal transfers.

If you keep up a good GPA I think you are allowed to transfer and if not, you are always allowed to double major(3.0 and above) or minor in Architecture.

AcceptedAlready knows better, dont quote my comment on admission.
But I should say architecture study is very different from design major, especially for becoming a professional architect. There is reason why most of architecture programs including CMU take 5 years.

oh do you mean, i can double major even though i didn't get accepted to school of architcture? I really wanna do architecture if i go to CMU.

Yes. You can double major in any school FREELY with a 3.0 or above (even computer science).

I don't think architecture is very demanded so I do believe you can probably transfer to Architecture without much trouble if you wanted. I know for sure they have spaces open at the moment.

Omg. Thank u so much. Ur answer is really helping me =D
So... if i go to CMU, what do i hab to do? Do i hab to tell the school before I entroll that i wanna do double major in arch. and design? Also, am i allowed to drop the course either arch. or design if i think I cant handle them both(if this happen, i know i will give up design study)?

No. You declare double majors junior year in college. You can transfer in spring of freshman year and in following semesters.

You can't drop your "main" college but that can be solved easily. Basically you can transfer once you start taking the required Architecture courses (and get B avg or above in your main architecture courses). A double major isn't that hard at CMU compared to other colleges though.

AcceptedAlready, are you an actual student, or are you just accepted? Architecture is a VERY time consuming major, as are many at CMU. Sure, time management is great, and could cut down on anybody's stress level, but I wouldn't call a double major involving architecture "not that hard".

As for xjamies86x, there is a large drop-out rate in architecture. Many students apply for it as a major without really knowing what architects do (the same is true of many tech-based majors like CS and CIT, since most high schools don't offer engineering classes), but of course the college always plans for that a bit. However, if you get good grades you should have no problem transfering when you get here...just make sure you see your advisor and work hard!

he's an actual student apparently working at the admissions office.

CMUGal and Acceptedalready- thank u for the informations!!!
I guess I hab to take both design and architecture to know which major is the best for me.

"Architecture is a VERY time consuming major, as are many at CMU. Sure, time management is great, and could cut down on anybody's stress level, but I wouldn't call a double major involving architecture "not that hard".

It is time consuming but that doesn't make it hard. I have a 3.8 and I hardly work at all and I'm planning a double major (taking some CS courses).

Of course "hard" is all subjective so I can only speak for myself.

Are you in architecture major, AcceptedAlready? Architecture classes usually run at least 6 hours per class and homework usually require much more time (a lot of physical works), so as design. Having double major in architecture and design, I think, bad for both studies; for the nature of the study, both majors require concentration. Maybe one of those two (studio based major) and academic major could work.

Which class runs 6 hours? I'm not a junior yet but I haven't heard of such intense workloads. Architecture is hard but I would think a double in CS/Business is comparable to such a workload. Obviously you have 5 years of Architecture to do but like I said, you can apply for transfer if you do not want to split your focus. Perhaps it would be easier to double major in something like a foreign language/creative writing and Architecture since I know a Creative Writing/CS double in HSS.

I've spent more than enough time on my advanced programming classes to know how time consuming certain classes are. Just take some Architecture classes and see how you do. If you can't take a double major, just transfer.
