Switching majors after applying

I applied to UCSD for econ, but if i got in i think i would actually want to do pre-med. anyone know if that would be possible?or are you locked in?

I guess the title should be “Switching majors after acceptance”.

At UCSD it is super easy to change major (assuming the major you want to change to is unimpacted). Literally all you do is log into your student account, click on the tab major and there is an option to change major and you type in the code for your new major and submit. Seriously at UCSD it couldn’t be easier to switch majors.

Switching majors usually isn’t the hard part (UCeric is correct). But you might have to stay an extra year or so in UCSD to fulfill the courses needed for your major.

Pre med isn’t a major, it’s a curriculum. You could still enter as an econ major and do the pre med curriculum without having to switch majors. Just make sure you have the lower division requirements for the pre med upper division requirements so you don’t end up at UCSD for 3 years instead of 2.

^ I knew that however, I didn’t know I could do econ w/ a pre-med emphasis

@Random_Monkey: Yes, you can major in absoluteley anything and still be considered “pre-med”. In fact, some schools (John Hopkins is one) like to see students, with majors that are not science related, applying to medical school. This just shows an added level of diversity to the applicant. All you will need to do is complete the medical school pre requisite classes (I listed a general list of these below) in addition to your economic’s major classes at UCSD

The reason so many people are “pre-med” and majoring in a science, is that the pre reqs for their major almost perfectly match the pre reqs for medical school. Thus, amounting to less classes, less work and a better chance of graduating in 4 years.

The commonly accepted coursework requirements for medical school include a minimum of 1 year of:

•General biology
•Physics with lab
•General chemistry (inorganic chemistry) with lab
•Organic chemistry with lab
•Calculus
•English

Note: Many medical schools also require additional classes in addition to the aforementioned such as Biochemistry and Statistics.
