I just transferred into Cal Poly from Cuesta College into Business. About two years ago I got into computer programming and I really like it and have gotten pretty good. My plan was to concentrate in Information Systems, which is what got me into programming. But now I feel like I should be in Computer Science, I’m also doing the CPE 101 labs in my spare time. My friend is encouraging me to switch, he graduated in CS. The problem is I’m gonna be 24 pretty soon and by the time I graduate I’ll have just turned 27. Not only that but I would have to take 16 units for about 8 quarters straight, in classes like Chem 124 and Calculus 1,11, and 111, I really struggle with math. So I’m afraid the workload might be too much and I don’t want to risk flunking, but I feel like I would enjoy the programming classes a lot and I want to work as a Software Developer. I know about the ICMA and what I’d have to do, I just haven’t spoken with an advisor yet, they may not even let me switch since its harder to change to into engineering. I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place right now and a quarter life crisis to go along with it. What should I do?

Have you also considered Software Engineering? More coding than IS, less math than CS.

I’ve looked into it, according to the required courses, theres the same amount of math.

If you have not exceeded the 24 unit limit yet, then go talk to the CS department advisers ASAP. They are there to help you. Not only will they tell you if you are eligible or not, they will also help you construct a plan to get you into the department. They can also give you further suggestions on where to go if CS is not an option. Get an email or a phone # for the college of engineering advising and start asking questions. This link may be a good place to start.
