I will be a senior this up coming fall but will have an extra year until I can graduate and am highly considering switching from my current biochemistry major into computer engineering. Currently, I work in a research lab and cannot handle the long hours and lack of a life that comes with laboratory work. I have considered clinical settings such as pharmacy but do not see myself enjoying that much. I have a strong interest in engineering and computers, I originally was a declared mechanical engineering major but switched during the orientation. I wanted to know if it will be worth it to switch so late in my degree.

You’re going to have to ask your college. Look at the classes needed to complete a computer engineering degree and see how long it would take you to graduate. Engineering majors usually take a good number of classes that you have to take in sequence, so it may take you a couple of years extra to graduate. Ask your advisor if you’re allowed to change majors so late. It’s possible that you may hit a maximum limit to how many units you can take at your school.

If you’ve never done CS/CE before, I’d suggest you try taking a couple classes before you do anything drastic like changing majors. Liking computers doesn’t mean you’ll like majoring in it.

You might also want to look into doing a minor, if changing majors can’t happen or it’s too many requirements.
