Hey all, I'm currently a philosophy major right now... i applied to cal, ucla, ucsd. I was just looking at the majors at cal and noticed a major that seemed extremely interesting (political economy). Is it possible to change into that major? i have no idea if it's impacted or not... it doesn't say its impacted on assist.org, but that site could be wrong. I could have all the pre-req's completed by the summer, as I have taken a couple of poli-sci courses already throughout my education. If anyone knows, please help me out. Thanks guys and have a great day

The only UC that offers that major is Cal, but from what I understand it isn’t TOO difficult to switch. You’re accepted under one major, but that doesn’t serve as your major declaration. Then you actually go DECLARE, and that’s when you’re set. Many people switch during then. IE- at UCLA, it’s hard to get into global studies, but not poli sci. So people apply under global studies and then switch to poli sci.

CSU morrow and san bern offer something like it too! Probably a REALLY interesting major. I applied to Cal, too, and I’ll look into it. Thanks!

It’s not quite that easy at Cal. Political Economy also has a ton of pre-reqs that you may not have completed. Which means that you have to go back and finish those and if you meet the GPA requirements they might admit you into the major.

There 2 history classes
Calc 1+2+3 + 2 stats classes + 2 econ classes as far as lower division classes

Thats basically 2 quarter worth of work~

Great points, Peter. Haha- I have all the prereqs except EVERY SINGLE Calc class, because I promised myself I would never again take a math class after stats… MUAHAHAH! So I guess it’s some non-mathematical degree like Peace and Conflict studies for me!

Hey, I am slightly confused about your post. You said,

Did you mean people apply as poli sci and then switch to Global Studies because GS is harder to get in? I also thought poli sci at UCLA was impacted. Correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers.

Hi James! Believe it or not (cuz I certainly didn’t believe it at first) Global Studies only accepts about 30% of their applicants, and the average person accepted has a 3.8ish. Poli Sci, on the other hand, accepts around 40% with the average GPA @ 3.65 (boy was I happy when I read that!). I happen to be a Poli Sci major who would actually stay Poli Sci though. But UCLA isn’t my first choice… or is it? I keep flip-flopping every day.

I can’t remember who, but some other nice post-er offered this link that really helped me understand how UCLA accepts people. Take a look at some of the trends, just for fun, like Asian Religions and Ancient Eastern Civilizations:

Check it out: [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2009 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof09_mjr.htm)

There, fixed.

Oh sorry haha- I was writing that last night AS I was falling asleep, trying to eat dinner… no more posts after midnight! Thanks girlyshout.

Haha there we go. Thanks for clearing that up! I applied a Global Studies major. Hopefully it’ll be either UCSB or UCLA.

hey peter where did you get those pre-req’s? on assist, it says that ONE history course is “recommended.” and only have to take stats… mind posting a link?

yeah peterr is wrong … I looked into that major and those are only recommended from what I saw on assist

"It’s not quite that easy at Cal. Political Economy also has a ton of pre-reqs that you may not have completed. Which means that you have to go back and finish those and if you meet the GPA requirements they might admit you into the major.

“noticed a major that seemed extremely interesting (political economy)” original post

basically all those classes listed are lower division classes you would have taken if you attended Cal as a freshmen so if you transfer into CAL and want to switch majors there you will need to complete those classes.

you don’t need to complete them all to transfer but you will to graduate once your there

quick check of Cal’s website

http://ls-major.berkeley.edu/polecis.html

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites for the Political Economy Major
(prerequisites indicated by asterisks)

Economics 1* or 2* (minimum grade of C required)
International and Area Studies 45* (minimum grade of C required)
Political Science 2
Statistics 2, 20, or 21
Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to four college-level semesters in a single modern foreign language.
Recommended: Mathematics 1A-1B

for their students there so basically once your in you will need to do those unit

Also for the 2 history course i was refering to the sense that if he wanted to switch to the major on assist it also says

IAS 45 Survey of World History (4)|IAS 45 must be taken at Berkeley
HISTORY 7B From Civil War to the (4)|HISTORY 12 Political and Social (3)
Present | History of the
| United States II

was the two history course he had to take once/if he gets in

yeah one of those history courses are RECOMMENDED. not required… i realize that its better if i take it but its not necessary. and i have taken both calc classes. i would have to take stats, econ2, and polisci 2 over the summer at my ccc. assuming i complete these (my gpa is a 3.92 at the moment), do you think i will have a legit chance of changing my majors?

well you have to wait a semester once your there iirc if you got accepted for philosophy . So you will have time to do the recommended class.

You will have to complete the class at Cal or CC either way if you want to graduate there.

It’s recommended in the sense for transferring but it’s mandatory once your there.

You don’t “change” or “switch” majors for Berkeley. You get accepted to a college at the university, and then you DECLARE a major for which you completed all the prereqs.

peterr are u sure about the recommended courses being required once you actually get to berkeley? i dont see it anywhere… the “required” courses section under assist.org is basically all you need for the major. those classes are the ones you need to fulfill to declare that major. if the “recommended” courses are actually required, why have a recommended section in the first place? im confused lmao

Ok you original question was if it’s possible to switch majors once your accepted.

In order to switch majors once your ACCEPTED you need to wait a quarter while your there and take the classes required to switch into the major.

The classes on assist is what they articulate to the school that you can take at C.C instead of at Cal .

So what i’m saying is you don’t need to the class to transfer into CAL but once your there you will need to finish it to completed lower division requirements anyways when your there.

If you’re a TAP applicant to UCLA and you’re admitted for your alternate major, do you think (or know if) they would allow you to declare as your first-choice?

Oh! Also. Global Studies seems to have fallen from the list of impacted majors…?!

“yeah one of those history courses are RECOMMENDED. not required… i realize that its better if i take it but its not necessary. and i have taken both calc classes. i would have to take stats, econ2, and polisci 2 over the summer at my ccc. assuming i complete these (my gpa is a 3.92 at the moment), do you think i will have a legit chance of changing my majors?”

@ iambeowulf710: If you finish those 3 prereqs (stats, econ, and poli sci) over summer, you’ll be able to switch at Cal during your first semester. All you have to do is declare it by having the head of the department sign you off on it. As long as you have those prereqs and all lower div requirements done, you are good to go!

I’m also doing this, so I’m positive it will work lol. I’ve spoken with multiple students at UCB and counselors. They all say you can switch into an impacted major like Poli Sci (No Haas or Engineering). I very well may switch from Phil to Psych…that or I’ll double. I’m not sure yet. However, I’m taking 1 of my 2 remaining prereqs for the Psych major over summer at UCB. Then, I’ll take my last prereq (cultural anthro) at UCB in the fall.

Of course, all of this is pending an acceptance. If I don’t get in, it won’t matter anyway. But yeah, to conclude, you CAN switch into an impacted major pending you meet prereq and GPA requirements. For Psych, you need a 3.2. I’m not sure what it is for poli sci…but that won’t be an issue for you with a 3.9+ lol.

You’re good to go, man. I love UCB.

damn man thanks for that response lol… well thats a good feeling lol if we both get into berkeley, ill hit u up for a poker game lmao
