Switching Majors

Hey, thanks for reading

My unweighted GPA is a 3.6-ish, and I’d like to apply to NC state and UNCC as a North Carolina resident. I have some of the basic community service hours and average ACT/SAT scores, and I feel like the only thing particularly noteworthy about my resume is a perhaps interesting collection of film credits, from low budget Indie stuff to major motion pictures.

Maybe its sad that high school students have such a diluted way of looking at their experiences, but my question is this: Does my theater, film and stand-up experience get me anything academically? Would I have better luck or even a promising chance at getting accepted with a film/television/theater major rather than another one? And could I, in theory, change my major after being accepted?

Thanks for all your help

Unless there is something unique about these schools, you can apply with any major you like and change it later. Most students change their majors at least once so the major you are indicating in your application is not a commitment. (This would be different if you were applying to a school that had a specific program or school with admissions separate from the regular admissions process - but it would be unusual for film study.)

Does it get you anything academically? No. It’s just an indication of interest, another way of saying who you are what you like.

I’ve heard a number of admissions officers say that they pay no attention to the intended major unless a student is applying to a special school (ex. nursing, engineering). From what they said about half of the students apply undecided and half of those who come in with a major end up changing it. It seems like your credits etc. are a great EC and if you want to pursue film that is great, but unless you are applying to a specialty film school like Tish I don’t think that your intended major will make a huge difference in you application.
