I’m currently am a secondary math ed (9-12) major, considering on switching to elementary education (k-6, with special ed certification). I flunked statistics and can’t proceed in the math ed major, but i can finish a semester early with elementary. Should i switch?
FYI, I’m a male and there are more elementary schools in my area than secondary.
I guess the question is, do you WANT to teach elementary? It’s obviously very different than high school. If you want to, I’d say sure, but don’t just use elementary teaching as a backup option if it’s not something you can really see yourself doing and enjoying.
Well, the more i think about it, the more i want to. I figured that working with 5-12 year olds would be better than teens.
Can you spend some time in an elementary classroom to be sure it’s the path you want? Also keep in mind that you’ll be teaching them every subject! That might not appeal to some people. I’m sure your school has someone you can speak with to help figure out if it’s right for you. Good luck Different ages have different issues.
