As of right now, I have applied early action to all my colleges into the nursing programs they have to offer. I am starting to receive acceptance/denial letters from school and have gotten into a few nursing programs. During this time I’m noticing that I really want to pursue education and nursing isn’t the best choice for me. How do I go about switching? When should I? Will it affect my aid?
Have you been admitted specifically into the nursing programs at these schools - like direct-entry nursing programs? Or into the general eds to prepare for application into nursing school in your sophomore year?
If it’s the former - first, make sure that you are really sure that you want to switch. It can be really difficult to transfer back into nursing once you are majoring in something else. Secondly, every school is going to have a different process. At some schools, you may need to reapply to the School of Education (or whatever it’s called) before you go to campus; at others, you can wait until you get there. Check with each individual school to see their policies - the student handbook/catalog is usually the best place to look.
If you got in at schools where you have to attend for two years before you can apply to the nursing schools, you’re probably okay - most of those schools admit you as undecided and you just have to take pre-nursing classes before you can transfer in. Still, you should check to be sure - some of them may admit you into a special “pre-nursing” track, and others may require you to apply for admission to the school of education.
Will it affect your aid? Only if some of your aid was major dependent, like special grants for allied health fields or something. Otherwise, it shouldn’t.
