I got into the engineering program at UVA and I heard that if you wanted to switch out of engineering it's hard to do at UVA, because they don't like people getting in under engineering only to switch to another major. Would it be possible for me to switch out of engineering after one year into a science or even political science?

um you should be able to switch out before school starts. it is harder to switch into engineering bc of the classes you would have had to take. just ask about it at orientation or something.

Switching out of engineering is not that bad at all. It's a little hectic to switch into engineering, but it's not that difficult either. I have seen it done both ways and it's not a huge dilemma.

talk to people during orientation but you may have to wait till second semester to officially transfer. All you'd end up doing is taking college courses your first semester but just listed as an e-schooler.

I have been contemplating this too and I've already read that you have to wait two semesters in the school you were accepted to for transferring. So if I was in the engineering school and I want to transfer to say, McIntire, could I choose not to take the standard courses that all engineering students must take the first year and replace them with McIntire requirements? It seems that if you are required to take the engineering courses all students take it is impossible to transfer to McIntire because there are hardly any electives.

If you are considering transferring to pre-Comm, you could start doing your pre-Comm requirements in the second semester. You have to take the required courses in the first semester unless you place out of classes.

A friend of mine is currently transferring out of engineering and into A&S. She said it's not bad, as long as you can put up with the piles of paperwork.

I'm posting another reply, because I want to get to 100 posts to see if that removes the "junior" from my profile.

Yeah, this is something I am seriously considering. I am kind of thinking I may want to do a major in physics instead of engineering, or maybe a gasp EE/physics double. I'll probably have to talk to someone at orientation, but I was under the impression you could transfer before school started, maybe I am wrong.

I was told though that a Rodman transferring into Arts and Crafts would almost always get Echols though, unless they literally fail every class 1st semester.

edit btw, at 267 posts I am still junior, aw poo

You can only transfer after first year. Trust me on the EE/Physics double major, be VERY careful. I know a current first year EE taking the same courses as me (I'm a second year Computer Engineering major) and double majoring in Physics and hates it. He complains about the absurd assignments given in the higher level physics classes. He is reconsidering and he is one of the few people I would call a genius.

It's true about the Rodman/Echols transfer. The programs have the same fringe benefits that matter (Rodmans have the same type of coursework as other engineers).

Malex, you have a PM. Let me know what you think.
