Switching Majors?

Okay, so I got accepted into General Engineering, but I want to switch into Mechanical Engineering (which I assume is much harder to get into). So exactly how hard is it to switch into ME? Or is it possible at all?

Thanks in advance!

You probably wont have such a hard time since you’re already engineering.

It’s probably possible for you.

It’ll just be extremely difficult if you decide to switch from college to college… but within the college, the requirements aren’t as hard nor as demanding.

[College of Engineering Advising Center - Majors](http://eadvise.calpoly.edu/dept/)

At this link you can find the flowcharts for both Gen. Engr. and ME. You can also find the change of major policy for ME.

Good luck. It shouldn’t be too hard, since you are already in Engineering. The flowcharts should be similar during the first year.

Oh. I read from somewhere on this forum where someone stated that the ME department had a lot of people switch out of the major so possible open spots?

Why do you want to switch already? What has made you change your mind about your department? I would think that ME is more popular and perhaps harder to get into. You may have to wait until some students leave. Just curious why you have decided to change already?

You will need to complete Math 141, Chem 124, Math 142, Phys 131, Chem 125, Math 143 and Phys 132 with a GPA (in these courses) of 2.75, be at Cal Poly for a minimum of 1 quarter, and keep your Cal Poly GPA (or your ME degree applicable GPA) at or above 2.75.

All these courses are required for GENE anyway, so complete them as soon as possible and MAKE GOOD GRADES and you should be fine for C of M. Historically, many students admitted to ME don’t make the grades in all these courses and therefore have to change out of ME, so it is likely that there will be openings in the department by Spring Quarter 2011. Good Luck, and congratulations on being admitted to Cal Poly College of Engineering!
