Switching majors?

I'm attending Rochester this fall and I was wondering how difficult it is to switch majors. I signed on as Chemistry but after touring the engineering buildings (led by a BME major), I think I may be more interested in Biomedical engineering.

Could I switch to BME before starting school or would I have to wait a semester?

You don’t declare your major until your sophomore year. My D is a freshman and changed her mind about her major a week before starting college classes. You don’t sign up for classes until your first week of orientation at which time you will talk to an advisor who helps you plan your schedule/program.

If I remember correctly, BME is a VERY long major at UR, if not THE largest # of required courses. No problem at all declaring /switching a major, but you will want to be carefull in getting in all the required classes. It may be easier to start BME, then if it’s not right, you should still be set for Chem. Your advisor will know.

The only issue may be advising. Since you were accepted into the College of Arts & Sciences, the assigned advisor (during freshman orientation) you’ll get will be from A&S. He/she may be as familiar with the course requirements for BME as an advisor from the College of Engineering.

It wouldn’t hurt to contact the BME department (by phone or email) and ask if there is anything you need to do.
