I need to change my discussion section, but since all the discussions have waitlists, telebears won't let me. I spoke to the undergraduate adviser and he told me to drop the class and put myself on the waitlist for the discussion I want to get in to, but I don't really see how that will practically benefit me in this situation. What should I do? If I found someone who wanted to switch with me would they let me--and if so how would I find someone? Thanks!

Well that’s the risky you need to take if you want to switch section. My suggestion is for you to keep going to your current section & the one you want to get in. By next week, the waitlist should start dying out for you to get in w/o the waitlist. There’s still risk, but you’ll just need to wait if you don’t want to risk dropping then waitlisting yourself for a new section.

I have no idea how switching section with someone work. Maybe someone could reply you on that!

oh no, that’s really frustrating. i would wait just another week.

No, don’t go to two sections and waste time. You learn the same exact thing and it is not like the GSI can add you to that section.

There is no way to switch section with somebody else since Telebears doesn’t have a system for that. If you drop, whoever’s next on the waitlist will be enrolled in.

You are indeed better off to drop the class and waitlist with the discussion section you want to be in. The math department actually changes the enrollment size to make sure every one on the waitlist is enrolled. So if you are on the waitlist, that essentially means you are enrolled in the class, not to mention several people dropping the class which only helps.

How exactly does that work? There is an upper limit on how many spaces each classroom can hold. The math department can’t just make the classrooms bigger in order to accomdate everyone

^Yup, they can’t. The only thing they can do is add more sections. They will only increase the section size for dire circumstances (which doesn’t involve being waitlisted/etc… must be a really good reason with proper documents).

You’re in an awkward situation :(… are there any quizzes in the upcoming weeks?

Just look at the past enrollment for each sections on Ninjacourses or something. It wasn’t always locked at 30 people-limit and they increased it whenever it was necessary.

Most of the classrooms can fit above 30 people and it’s not hard for them at all to change the upper limit. But as Calicious mentioned above, a lot of people drop and it always works out in the end.

Hii, I also want to switch sections and would be willing to switch with you (provided that the time works out).
I’m in 8-9 am with Vu and am most interested in switching to 3-4 pm with Wong. Please let me know if that works.
