Switching mentors

Hello everyone, I am currently a high school sophomore involved in a research project where an undergraduate student and a tenured professor are both my mentors. I work more closely with the undergrad and less with the professor, however both are always in the lab when I am there.

Since working in the lab, I have realized that my interests are no longer in the topic I am researching (quite frankly, it never was, but I really needed a position). Also, I need to complete all of my research over the summer because I will be abroad for the fall semester next year. Right now, their summer plan for me is to only do field work on some weekends and that's it. Definitely not completing the bulk of my research, which is what I must do.

I want to change mentors and projects. I have been looking at other professors' work, and have gotten very excited about several that I would love to help. I know switching mentors is possible, since high school students aren't really that important anyway to professors. But how would this look on college apps? I'm afraid that it shows I'm uncommitted.
