Switching rooms in the middle of the year?

Hey, so i'm a freshman living in the dorms and my situation is that my family wants me to move into a triple room to save some money, but i'm currently in a double room. I've previously talked to my resident director and had an arrangement to switch rooms within my dorm building, but at the last minute the girl cancelled and I couldn't find anyone else within the building who was willing to switch. I know that it's past the point of everyone getting to know each other, and people are happy where they are, but do you guys think that it's still possible to get a room switch? And how should I go about this without offending my current roommate, being inconsiderate by asking other people, etc.

You’ll probably have people leaving for Spring semester, so there might be openings. If your school has Spring admits, your chances are down a bit. I’m not sure how possible it is to swap out without offending your roommate, but your best bet would be to explain that it’s a money thing, etc. I’m not sure how much good asking others would do, seems like something that should be sorted out with the housing office.

I also want to try to stay inside the building, because I know people/it’s close to my classes, but should I consider moving to a dorm further away just to save money?

Depends entirely on your school. At my school if we even had triples there would be people itching to move out of them, but here getting housing transfers is notoriously difficult unless you find someone to switch with yourself. If you find someone to switch with, then the institutional side shouldn’t be too difficult.

Trying to stay within the building will only complicate things. If your parents really want you to move, you should look into other buildings.
