Like many students entering UVA, I'm not sure what I want to major in. I've thought about Computer Science, Astrophysics and Aerospace Engineering. After A LOT of thought, I chose to do Aerospace at UVA. The problem is, I applied for CLAS instead of SEAS. Originally I DID apply to SEAS but I had my school of choice changed before I got my decision from the university. Is there any way that I could go BACK to SEAS or am I stuck with CLAS...

My friend emailed one of the deans (might have been an engineering dean) and got it changed within a day. He did that 2-3 weeks after being admitted so that might have been why he got through so easily. Hopefully you’ll be able to but it might be hard with the wait list and maximum capacity of the colleges. Good luck.

From the SEAS Undergraduate Handbook: Academic Regulations and Procedures

NOTE: You may run into a problem here as SEAS has formally relased the waitlist. I’d make sure this is what you want and contact them as soon as possible.

Try to enroll in the engineering classes anyway and apply to transfer at the end of first year when people start dropping out.

All changes were supposed to be requested prior to March 1st, but Dean Roberts has made exceptions up until a point. The School of Engineering is full right now and my understanding is that the dean is not allowing any more changes.

There are always students moving between schools at the end of the first year.

Does this mean that it is going to take me an extra year to graduate since I’m gonna transfer schools? (sorry, not at all familiar with the workings of college) Is it normal for students to change schools at the end of the first year? I highly doubt that most people knew what they were getting into when they decided on a school

can’t believe I actually asked to be considered for CLAS instead of SEAS (which I originally applied to)…WHAT WAS I THINKING??? I don’t do art and history!! bring on the math and engineering!!!

Nope. Plenty of people change schools and graduate on time.

yousaf, take a look at this link regarding the process for transferring into SEAS. There are also suggestions for pre-transfer coursework.

I have a similar problem, actually. I’m interested in both Commerce School and Engineering but I’m in CLAS right now, lol. So basically, I have no idea what I’m doing.

From my understanding, it’s possible to transfer at the end of the 1st semester (dec 15 deadline), right? So you wouldn’t miss too much if you start taking SEAS classes the second semester of the first year?

yeah mmts15 thats right I found out that you absolutely cannot change schools anymore and have to attend CLAS but you can change it at the end of the first semester and this happens more often than not also you can have counselors recommend courses which most closely resemble those of different schools within UVa

Sweet, thanks for the info.

mmts15, if you’re planning to switch to the engineering school, you should take the introductory engineering classes even though you’re still in the college. the courses are set up in a sequence, so things will be tougher later if you’re behind. talk to your OL about this during course registration at summer orientation.

Can you enroll in e-school classes if you are in clas? I’m in the e-school already as an incoming freshmen. It just seems they would keep the classes exclusive to the kids in the school. If you can, go for it.

It’s not a big deal to switch between schools provided you have taken the appropriate courses. Research these before you go to your orientation, and make sure you tell your advisor of your plans. Plenty of Engineering students take CAS courses and vice versa; in fact you can do a computer science major either through Engineering or through Arts and Sciences.

Some classes might be full or restricted to eschool but most aren’t (chem, etc are through the college anyways last time I checked). You should plan on taking calculus, either eschool/apma or college 130 series; chemistry+lab; computer science if you can get in; and some sort of elective. i’m not sure if you’re allowed in the engr or sts courses other first year eschoolers take but if you can get in to those, take those instead of the elective and computer science.

I don’t think you’ll be able to switch in time for 1st semester but talk to the dean when you get here. You’ll definitely be able to switch in time for the beginning of 2nd year.

For your 1st year, take the sciences (Chem 1610 and Physics 1425) and their respective labs which are required for 1st year e-schoolers. My chem class was about 50/50 CLAS and SEAS students while Physics 1425 gives SEAS priority but is still open to CLAS. STS is technically SEAS only but I know some people in the college who were able to get in the 2nd semester class after talking to the dean about switching provided that it wasn’t full.

If SIS won’t let you register for introductory STS or ENGR, look for an open section in the first week of the fall semester and talk to the professor. Falling behind in your courses won’t kill you, but you really want to avoid it if possible.

@Lw2491: I can’t seem to find Physics 1425. Is 2010 an alternative?

Also, is there a list of required courses for SEAS somewhere? I can’t find much on UVA’s website… there’s a lot more info for CLAS.

Thanks for your help, guys. :)

AFAIK the specific number of each elective varies by major, so there no one uniform list of requirements to fulfill. Here’s the Systems requirements (PDF warning):

http://web.sys.virginia.edu/files/undergrad_students/SIEplan_2014grad_reg_03_23_11.pdf

The requirements listed in that document for the first and second semesters are required for all SEAS students, as is General Physics II and Science Elective II. Other than that, the specific number of technical/HSS/unrestricted electives varies by major.
