Switching Schools

For the past year (Grade 10) I have gone to a private boarding school which has been all around amazing. I thought I would be returning in the fall however my parents decided to not continue in April of this year way past any application times for other private prep schools.

They are sending me to my old school (public) where I have stopped talking to everyone so I have concerns socially however the main problem is my “plan” was to get my AP capstone. I was in feeder courses this year that go into APs immediately which was amazing and I got a high A average. My courses next year consisted of 4 APs including Seminar and my senior year was to include 5 APs

My old school that I’m returning to offers a grand total of 5 APs which only 1 of which I was planning on taking. My parents don’t want me to do my Ap courses online but at the same time my courses this year were all enriched to be equivalent to a grade 11 or 12 course. They keep saying to give it up but I simply just want to challenge myself. I don’t want to go back in difficulty in my courses. I’ve given up on my AP capstone diploma but cannot give up taking more challenging courses. I am a well rounded (I have my teachers for piano, am heavily involved in musical theatre, play tennis and volleyball, and do a fair amount of volunteer work) so adding extracurriculars will not make up in terms of college admissions. I don’t want to go back a grade level (or two) to fit in the schools limitations especially since the teachers are not the best. I have no clue what to do and it’s giving me a ton of anxiety. Pls help

I am not sure that AP Capstone is something that colleges have really decided is important in admissions yet as it is new. So I wouldn’t worry about that too much.

So where does that leave you?

  1. Talk to your Guidance Counselor about options. What courses would have them check off the “most rigourous” coursework? Are there any other programs they have that might be good for you?
  2. Can you think about taking some others of the 5 APs?
  3. Can you do Dual Enrollment at your local Community college? You could take more challenging courses there.
  4. Would it make sense to do any of the AP classes online?
