<p>Has anyone ever used this option before? I am waitlisted for a section and I noticed another section has an open spot, but I'm afraid if I try to switch into that section and it doesn't work, then I will lose my spot on my original section's waitlist. Does anyone have any experience/advice?!</p>
<p>Yeah, I’ve used the switch section option tons of times. I dunno if it works differently for waitlisted people, but if you aren’t able to switch into a different section, you remain in the section you were originally in.</p>
<p>Drop the section and add it. It’s different for waitlist. I was in the completely same situation as you, and I am not misunderstanding you. DROP THE WAITLIST AND ADD IT.</p>
<p>switching sections on a waitlist switches you to the other section’s waitlist, since you can waitlist on an open section. This leaves the spot open for other people to take the spot.
Of course, hopefully you’re clicking through the link to the live-updated part on OSOC. The data in the search page is not up to date.</p>
<p>ahh im scared because one of my friends dropped and she couldnt get the open spot in one of her classes and dropped to the bottom of the waitlist. so there’s no way i can switch into the open spot without sacrificing my waitlist spot?
telebears REALLY needs a better system - stupid manual waitlists. people steal open spots and people on waitlists never seem to get in :(</p>
<p>there are 2 types of waitlists: manual and automatic.
if your class is automatic, dropping and adding that open section will get you into that open section.
if your class is manual, then check what category you fall in and if that category is open then you can add the section and get in. if it isn’t open, you will still be waitlisted, though being waitlisted for a more open section will increase your chances of getting into that section. unless your class doesn’t really care about sections at all (e.g. psych).</p>

<p>The probability that somebody will grab the seat in the time it takes you to drop and add is low (unless it’s some crazy class), and so I imagine the problem was that your friend thought there was an open spot when it doesn’t.</p>
<p>my class waitlist is manual (it’s a lab) but there are no course restrictions so there isn’t a certain category open/closed. i am pretty high on the waitlist already for my section and am afraid to give up my spot. telebears “open sections” button and the current enrollment info both say there are spots that just opened up in one of the sections, so people must be dropping. but is the department not letting people enroll at the moment and they will place people in themselves?</p>

This happened to me too. If you are waitlisted for a class, and want to switch into a section that is open, you have to drop the class and then re-enroll.
This is because you can’t be waitlisted for lecture and enrolled in a section, or vice versa, according to an orreg person.
But I would be careful about dropping the class to enroll in sections that people are dropping out of… just because it might not work. because telebears likes to fail us all the time. And especially since you’re high up on the waitlist.</p>
<p>I wasn’t saying anything about checking the restrictions. It’s just that the page which i said to check has more updated info on the class.</p>

<p>yea i was checking the right page and it still says there are seats open. i guess i will just wait it out :(. but seriously i cannot believe they aren’t fixing telebears. i was wondering how people were getting into the class that couldnt even waitlist because it was full, now i see that they could just sneak in and take opening spots and cut everyone on the waitlist. UGH.</p>
