switching to engineering

i applied as undeclared. if i later want to declare an engineering major, can i switch to the engineering school from the college of letters & science? is the process hard?

you can switch into engineering but it's hard (very hard).

that sucks. cuz i didnt know what i wanted to do when i started applying, so i picked undeclared. and now i think i may want to do engineering...poopers

I don't know how it works if you haven't actually started yet. I do think that the engineering school does their own 'cut' on admissions. If you haven't started yet, maybe there's some way to immediately request the transfer. I suggest asking flopsy but then contacting the school and asking them.

Let the HSSEAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs (6426 Boelter Hall) know as soon as your freshman Fall Quarter starts so they can look at your high school record. Most CL&S students don't make the cut, so don't get your hopes terribly high by default.

my roommate switching from bio to bio engineering pretty easily. if you apply early in the year, they just review your high school records and then confirm your admission.

actually it's better that you applied for L&S first because you can re-apply for the school of engineering and they'll consider you on the same criteria as they did others (maybe easier?). If you get in you get in, if not at least you still have letters and sciences. You also get a second or third chance to transfer during the school year. I believe the minimum requirements to to transfer your first year is 2 math classes, 1 physics course, and maybe another class? and during your second year the number of classes increase, making it harder to transfer.

ucsducladad is right; in your 1st quarter you can request a change into engineering and will be "generally" judged on the same criteria as frosh who applied directly to engineering. See http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/change.html Unfortunately what the school means by "generally" is not quite clear ...

There is no problem with starting out as an undeclared major in L&S, and then switching to engineering after a few quarters. What you need to do is take the prerequisites for the engineering major (chemistry, calculus, physics, etc), keep up a reasonable GPA, and then fill out an application to switch majors whenever you have made your final decision. The Engineering department also requires that a short essay be written on "Why I Want to be an Engineer" to be submitted with the application to enter the major.

i was also thinking about switching to engineering..
would being a regent scholar help me in any way?

thanks guys!

wond3rland:

I would imagine that being a regent scholar would help if for no other reason than your stats must be very high to be awarded regents. If you're interested, follow flopsy's advice above.

how long does it take for them to review your application?
if i applied 1st quarter, would i have to wait until the 2nd quarter to find out?

When my son switched to engineering, it was in the summer after his freshman year, right after the end of spring quarter. After he sent the application in, it only took a couple of weeks to find out, which was good, because then he knew in time to schedule the next year's classes, some of which are only open to people within the engineering major.

Flopsy is right. You will need a relatively high GPA to be admitted via transfer of major from L&S.

I have no basis of this GPA, but it should be at least over 3.5.
