Switching to Petroleum Engineering

I am an Electrical engineer, working in an oil and gas company since a year. I would like to switch to petroleum engineering. The only way to make this switch, which came to my mind was to get a Masters in Petroleum Engg from US or Canada. Can some one guide me about my decision? Will I get a petroleum engg job just by doing Masters? I shall be thankful for any response.

Since you are already working in the field, just get more experience and then see if the company will pay for you to get a Masters in Petroleum Engineering.

My company does pay for Masters, but only for those who are mechanical/chemical/petroleum engineers. This disqualifies me for their scholarship, as I am electrical engineer. Anyhow, Is it sure that I shall get a job as petroleum engineer, if I get masters degree in petroleum engineering?

Are you only determined to work in the oil & gas arena your whole career?

Yes, in oil and gas. I like it.

Since you work there already, you should ask some of the upper management. They would be able to give you an answer after explaining your scenario/plan. You might be more valuable to them with a master’s in EE.

I have asked. Petroleum engineers are more valued here than electrical engineers. Because petroleum is the core of this industry. That’s why I am trying to switch.

you can apply to grad school and see if you get into petroleum engineering. you may need to take some basic geology or petroleum classes specific to petroleum before the actual masters program. certain masters degrees in petroleum engineering are geared towards people whose majors are different that petroleum, and some masters degrees are geared towards people who already have a masters degree. in Canada i would suggest dalhouise university in halifax or memorial university in newfoundland. in the US I think texas A&M offers a masters for people without a petroleum undergrad who want to get into petroleum. i think its offered online as well. I am Canadian so I am not 100% sure about the american schools.
