I have been accepted to the school of arts and sciences for the upcoming school year, but is it possible to switch into the school of engineering before the start of the first semester? May 1st is the final day to reply to the acceptance i believe, so would it be possible to change before that? If anyone has any experience in the e-school please tell me what you thought of it, because i am on the fence between both schools. thanks a lot for anyones feedback

Sorry, but you are stuck in the College of Arts and Crafts for a year. You can transfer into the E-school for the next year, but you can take E-school classes during first year so you don't have to worry about not taking classes important to your degree.

why would you wanna be in the eschool?

Hazelorb- why not? Engineering is an awesome degree to earn, even though the work/classes is ridculous.

acs221- you can take most classes than engineers take their first year, but it's not guarenteed. Your best bet is to just wait till orientation and talk to your advisor. They'll point you in the right direction :)

so is it possible to take all of the required first semester engineering courses while registered in the school of arts & sciences, and transfer after that? also, shoebox, is the work in eschool too overwhelming for even the first year? thanks again for your help.

hazelorb- Why would you wanna be in brown? :P

The E-school is one of the greatest things that I have at UVA. I am too lazy to write five 2-10 page papers for five different classes. I get tired of writing down every other word that leaves a professor's lips.

I like tackling problems like finding the common-mode input resistance of a differential amplifier using a bipolar junction transistor (hint: it's two times the resistance in series with the collector terminal). I get a feeling of acomplishment when I realize that my word find algorithm is too slow because I did not change Visual C++'s configuration from Debug to Release.

I also just get a kick out when I say or do engineering stuff in the company of College students like comparing my logic circuit with desu's and notice his uneccessary use of multiplexers while people close by just freak out at the sight of our work.

We is Engineers.

acs221-First year is intense but is not as intense as the later years. You are allowed to take all of the introductory engineering course in the college, but there could be some sections could be filled during orientation by those entering engineering majors.

Typical First Year Courseload

First Semester
STS 101 (Technical writing and presentations)
CHEM 151 (Intro to Chemistry)
CHEM 151L (Chemistry Lab)
APMA 109/111 (Calculus I/II)
ENGR 162 (Introduction to Engineering w/ a semester project and fun with Excel and Mathcad)

Second Semester
PHYS 142 (Physics with test averages in the 20-40 out of 100 range)
PHYS 142W (Physics labs that are not as bad as the lecture depending on the TA)
APMA 111/212 (Calculus II/Multivariate Calculus)
CS 101/101E/101X (Intro to Computer Science with different sections depending on your experience with CS TAKE 101)
Science Elective (Take either CHEM 152 Required for Chem E, BIOL 201/202, MSE 209 Preferred for Civil, Mech/Aero, and some Systems, ECE 200 Preferred for Electrical, Computer, and some Systems)
HSS Elective (Take a class in an approved College subject)

This is a lot of work, but that is what college is.

I agree with UVAMalex...the work SUCKS sometimes, but in the end, it's so worth it. Not only will you leave college with a (average of) $65K+ (although I think that number is around $70K now, or will be for you) salary, but you're smart. And you can abuse that. My friends (i'm at VT, wanting to transfer to UVA...i'll let you know how that goes May 1) marvel at the stuff I spew out about what i'm doing in classes, and are amazed i'm even still alive.
But, don't launch yourself into engineering for those reasons. Those are just reasons to help get through the bad days. You need to love what you're doing: I happen to love knowing how things work, as do most engineering majors. Life will be hell if you don't have atleast some love for it. Yes, we all ask ourselves "Why?!?!" sometimes, but if you can't find an answer, you shouldn't be doing engineering.

As for intense workload: yes, it's going to suck. But UVAMalex is right, it'll get harder. I'm sort of in a great position if I transfer: UVA offers more rooms for electives/a minor which is great because I really want to take classes outside of engineering. At the same time, I suffered/survived VT's first year (known for being a weed-out school...1/3 of engineering freshmen drop out here, simply because either they fail too many classes or they just can't tough it...freshman year here is ridiculous!), so i'm prepared for the workload. It should be good times at UVA's e-school if I get in :) But don't be scared about the workload: plenty of people survive it, you have 3 years left to salvage your GPA, and most people get used to the work fairly quickly. Besides, you have 500 other first-years in the e-school doing the same thing :)

lol i was kidding... sort of... all the papers and ridiculous bull in A+S is stupid but that is why i am a math major.
also the op did not specify which specific program he/she wanted to switch into.

ps. brown = amazing, dont even try and diss it, you know you wanna live here too "uvamalex" whose real name i wont post to protect your online privacy or whatever.... why is that your username anyways??

Seeing as how the first year for all engineering majors are the same and I gave recommendations for the science elective, the specific undergraduate program is irrelevant for this discussion.

I was kidding about Brown. I'm okay with Brown in moderate doses, but I'm not sure about living there. I'll stick with JPA for the rest of my wahoo years.

My username is my username because "Malex" is my base internet username, "UVA" is my alma mater, and "09" is my graduation year.

i didnt know you were living on jpa, what about your frat, or do they live on jpa. i know nothing of anything, obviously.
umm i knew that part lol i meant the malex part. it looks like alex which isnt your name lol.
ummmmmm caine tonight. im going to get eva once im done checking cc.

Shhh! People are not supposed to know my real name is nothing close to Malex.

Also, not all fraternities are on Rugby Road. We are living on JPA.

One more thing, thanks for being a good sport and bring all of the stuff for tonight.

yea except eva was a vhs so we'll have to dig through the collection if we want to dub stuff outside of excel saga
ps i have all of it, including the legendary last episode (basically hardcore excel saga-ish ebichu action)

^^^^^^^^^^^Reason #30842 not to hang around math/engineering majors, lol.

^^^^^^^^that comment is Reason #4592179 that engineering majors are better than everyone else

but i'll agree on the math major part ;)

yea but malex is engineering and i am clas math so um we both are in on the amazingness that is caine, the anime club, and it is awesome. so :P

CAINE is full of awesomeness, and if you fail to see that then you are just sad.

Ha, I had no idea there was such a nerdy subculture at UVa. I may fit in after all!

And yeah, no dissing on math/science/engineerig nerds, cav! I seem to remember that at one point you wanted to be a physics major... hehe

Oh, I have no problem with physics/math, ehiunno (and I might still major in math). What I mean is that math/physics majors can be...weird. Anime? Right...

I whole heartedly agree. And as long as you're implying that some of them are like that, then you can add back in the engineeerings...

...there are truely some wierd ones. But hey, as long as they're happy, i'll continue being the bubbly girl. Makes the world spin.

haha, thats understandable Cav. I am fine with anime, and actually enjoy a few select programs, but i have witnessed it get out of control... scary
