I didn’t receive any merit money when I got my financial aid package in December, so does that mean I won’t receive any at all? I have a 3.8/4.0 GPA and got a 1550 on the SAT, so I was thinking that I would be getting so merit money.
My son has similar stats and didn’t receive any merit money either. 3.8/ 33 ACT (34 super scored)
My D’s merit award came in her acceptance letter.
is syracuse known to give out merit or is it not common
They do give it but I don’t know how common it is. I had two kids accepted and both got merit, but I don’t think that means anything. There is merit from the University (Founders, Chancellors and Deans scholarships, plus a few other named scholarships.) Each individual college also has merit awards. And there is the Coronat Scholarship, which is more of a competition and awards full tuition.
My S, class of 2020 got his merit money with his acceptance letter. However he did apply Regular Decision so we didn’t hear until a March.
My son was accepted EDII. We got ZERO merit money from Syracuse and we don’t qualify for need-based financial aid (not that we don’t need it). I’m wondering what criteria Syracuse really considers for merit aid. Is there a cutoff for grades and test scores? How much are extra-curriculars considered?
We’re really disappointed because, in my opinion, Syracuse boasts about their “generosity” with both financial need-based and merit scholarship money as part of their marketing - some number like $291 million/75% of students receive it…etc.
If I had known we would get absolutely nothing, we may have steered him away from Syracuse. Thankfully, he has been accepted into all but one of the schools he applied to, and a few have offered generous merit aid. So he has great options, including our flagship state school. We love Syracuse, and would love for him to attend, but it doesn’t make sense financially when it costs twice as much as our very highly regarded state university.
I’m really not complaining, well maybe venting … but just curious about who is getting this merit aid???
And this may sound snarky, but when we visited campus last week for another visit, the number of kids walking around in $825 Canada Goose parkas was astounding - as if they had been handed with student ID on the first day of school! LOL.
Any insight would be most appreciated.
@puppy1234 last year my D did not get any merit money. She had a 3.85gpa, 33 ACT and lots of leadership activities. She was accepted to Newhouse so not sure how much merit they give out.
Wow! those are great scores! Is she attending Syracuse? Even more reason to ask, what does a kid have to do to get merit aid?
Another part of our concern is that our D is right behind our son, class of 2024…so we’ll have two in college for three years. Both of my kids love Syracuse. But I’m not sure it makes financial sense to do it. All the best to you!
@puppy1234 She is not attending Syracuse. She got a half tuition scholarship at USC. My husband and I both went to Syracuse. He actually took our son there last weekend. He’s class of 2020. He loved it! He’s thinking of applying ED next year. His stats are much lower than his sister’s so no merit expected. Just hoping he’ll get in.
We live in CA so he needs to decide if he wants to be so far away and if he can handle the weather!
I got in this year to the college of engineering and computer science and got $28,000 of merit scholarship, i have a 3.9 gpa and a 32 act.
We didn’t apply ED because I felt they were less likely to give money if you are bound. I am very curious to see if we get anything. I went there and my son demonstrated a ton of interest. His scores are not at all near the excellent ones listed above. My friend’s daughter had similar scores to my sons and got 10,000 regular decision.
Has anyone received the FIRST Robotics scholarship yet? Wondering if they create a waitlist or something cause they give out 10 but maybe everyone who gets it doesn’t enroll. They also now seem to give out project lead the way scholarships-10 of them too but when my son applied we were unaware of that and I have no idea if there was an additional form to fill out. These are all School of Engineering scholarships. Thanks and good luck to everyone. The wait is really getting on my nerves!!!
My daughter was accepted to Syracuse (aerospace) but no merit (4.4W 3.9UW 1300 SAT). I am also confused as we were heavily recruited in the beginning with one of the local admissions reps and was told how generous the “Syracuse Family” was. At full sticker of $70k - I don’t care how prestigious, that’s absurd to spend that much. She decided to stay in CA and accept SDSU that has a nationally ranked aerospace program and ALL of the prospective companies that she would like to work for in the area.
Same situation. Similar stats and no merit and what’s worse is that I am alumni. They found no value in me or my son. No way spending that on their engineering program.
Anyone successfully appeal their merit? Just curious if that’s a real thing that can happen. Thanks
@puppy1234 I was curious how can you apply ED!! and not commit if he was accepted? Didn’t you have to sign an agreement? The reason we didn’t apply ED is that you are bound by the decision?
My son was admitted into aerospace. Similar stats to others posted above with no merit. But we did receive substantial aid that makes Syracuse competitive to the other schools my son was accepted to, including our instate Rutgers.
Marcie123, where are you from in California? We were also there during winter break and are also from California. My daughter is ok with the weather, just hoping she can get in and hopefully receive some scholarship money!
@marblee we live in the East Bay of San Francisco. How about you?
