Syracuse and Coach Slapped With N.C.A.A. Penalties

Perhaps the most serious allegations in the NCAA report is more connected to Syracuse’s football team than the basketball team. And the football team during the period in question – 2004 through 2006 – was one of the worst in the nation. Somebody forgot to tell somebody that the point of cheating is to win.

That said, having read the NCAA report and the Chancellor’s rebuttal, this stuff is minor league compared to what went on at North Carolina and Miami. I like Bob Costas’ “utopian” conclusion: nobody makes the college team until they first pass muster with the admissions office using the same criteria all other admits must meet. Never happen.

Yup. I’ll believe it when I see it. There’s too much money involved for the major-college sports industry to return to traditional values of academia.
