Congratulations, my son is currently a third year Aerospace engineering major at Cuse.

@vamom4 @NJmom3G sounds like you didn’t read her original post at all and didn’t read my two responses thoroughly.

  1. Her post said VERBATIM: “we had a terrible tour guide–he was foreign
” those were HER words, NOT mine.
  2. She went on to say he mumbled and didn’t know much about the university. Therefore, when I first responded, I stated those two factors were VALID reasons. I suggested she state those factors without also saying he was terrible bc her was foreign. Being foreign has nothing to do with it.
  3. I did NOT assume he was a person of color. In fact, in my second response, I explicitly said I didn’t know. What I DO know is that the majority of international students at Syracuse are people of color so someone reading this thread, not the tour guide himself, but rather a different international student/applicant may feel both unwelcome as someone not native to the US AND feel there are racial undertones there.

Having read your posts I think you would be happier at a HBCU than a PWI.

@Mom270 How do you figure?

Hey, @Lmcartwright just hopping on to say I support you. I had the exact same thought when I read that post and I thought you expressed your point of view very clearly - I knew exactly what you meant and agree. Just because it seems to be hard for them to hear doesn’t make it any less valid and important. Thank you for saying it.
EDITING to add, I can’t believe the responses you’re getting. I guess this page is like anywhere else on the internet, it has it’s share of people who aren’t open to considering how their words impact others.

You seem to have a very strong disposition to impose your perceptions on other people rather than seek to understand them. Engaging across difference in a respectful manner is important.

Current cuse freshman at newhouse majoring in BDJ (best school ever btw)!!! i work with the newhouse vistor center and decisions should come out tmr afternoon for the first wave! they come out in waves for the next three weeks ish so if you don’t hear anything don’t be discouraged. i didn’t hear back til the second week and i applied RD. seriously best of luck i remember this like it was yesterday. everything happens for a reason!!!

@Mom270 Her equating foreign to terrible is what I struggled with. I didn’t read into anything: that is what she stated clearly—what was I to seek to understand? I was very respectful in sharing my opinion. Are you saying because I spoke up at all my daughter now doesn’t belong Syracuse? How did you know she’d be happier at an HBCU? How do you even know she’s Black?

You talked about your concern about your child attending a PWI so I’m not sure what other type of institutions would not be PWI other than HBCU but I have no interest in arguing with you. Good luck in your college decision process.

Thank you so much for posting. This wait has been so hard on everyone. My D applied ED2 but was deferred because silly me when reviewing her application hit the wrong button for first choice. They said to fix and not worry so we did but now after reading all the chat we are worried. She is also test optional so that worries us as well. She is looking to major in photojournalism and sports media. :crossed_fingers:

Please stop arguing! This blog is for admission RD only and not political!!! If need then please do so in a private chat. Thank you and good luck to your children.

I totally never said that. Good luck to you.

@mom270 you said my daughter would be happier at an HBCU. You did say that.

I said You would be happier not your daughter. Good bye.

It’s good to talk about these things and be aware of how our words are interpreted.

I’m not the one attending college—my daughter is. I would then read your comment as clearly applying to my daughter, not me. Regardless, it’s not ok.

@Ellyn thank you. Your words mean a lot :orange_heart:

@Suetj3 asking for my daughter’s identity and the identities of international students to be respected ISN’T political. It’s humane and decent and reasonable.
