Syracuse dorm

Can someone give me the download on the dorms at Syracuse? My D has been admitted Newhouse this fall. Do we get to choose or is it assigned? Are there any with kitchen to cook in? My D is vegetarian and likes to cook herself, but is the cafeteria food good? Also, she is still weighing NYU vs Syracuse, having been accepted to both. Newhouse is such a big name in Journalism, I am sure she will benefit from it. But what about internship opportunities? What are there to do for Media majors?? Are the classes intensive?
What are the modes of transport to big cities? like Manhattan? or major international airport?
Is there a lot of drinking and partying after sun down? What if you are not into those kind of thing? What else can kids do?

I cannot speak to Newhouse vs. NYU (Newhouse has an amazing reputation, but Syracuse is not NYC). As far as dorms, freshmen do not have a choice. It is assigned. If you know who you want to room with you can request that person and they will honor. My daughter was in Boland freshman year - it is on the edge of campus, but near the Carrier Dome. It is part of a large complex called “BBB” - there are 3 buildings. My D said they have the best cafeteria! I don’t think cooking is an option. Hope that helps, and good luck!

^^another double ED kid…Oy vey; I give up…

Happymom: I just read your other posts…when your daughter was accepted to Newhouse back in December, part of the ED agreement that you signed required her to withdraw all of her other applications…it it not relevant that she was accepted to LSP, and therefore, not binding, because she shouldn’t have even gotten ANY acceptance from NYU in ED II…

What would you have done if she DID get her first choice at NYU? She would have been bound to 2 schools…

Whatever…

As others have said, freshman dorm assignments are random. There are a number of options on main campus - small rooms but great location. If you apply for one of the learning communities, then you have a 90% chance of knowing what dorm you are in. Syracuse has rooms called split doubles with a wall down the middle - sounds wierd but they are great. There are many students who are vegetarians and the cafeterias cater to them, so that shouldn’t be a problem.
NYC is reachable by plane (very expensive), bus, and train. On the holiday weekends, they run a bus to major cities for a small amount. Many of my D’s friends take the bus and they say it is easy. There are buses and taxis to the bus station.
There is a lot of partying but it is certainly possible to do other things. Tons of activities and there isn’t any pressure to drink.
NYU certainly has lots of partying too - and you have the whole city to take advantage of. But I will say that my son never really ventured much out of the village for most of his time there.

At admitted student’s day 2yrs ago we came across the honors LC rep, and we told him we’d rather have Sadler than BB. He took our name and preference, and assigned our son to Sadler. It wasn’t a sure thing, but sounded like the rep knew what to do.

Dorms are random, you can be close to your classes (Shaw Hall or Ernie David) or farther out (Lawrinson, BBB). There aren’t really kitchens in freshmen dorms to cook in. The cafeteria food isn’t that bad, there are a lot of options.
A lot of people take greyhound or megabus to NYC, its about $72 roundtrip. The airport is about 20min away from campus. I think it would be good for your daughter to go to a school not in the city so she can get the full experience.
Newhouse is also a gateway to amazing opportunities. Syracuse is obviously a party school too like any other big suburban school but the school does have other options of things to do during nights. Also there are students who don’t party all the time and I’m sure once she settles down and makes friends they can find things to do.
