Syracuse Dorms

Do all dorms at Syracuse have Split Double rooms? I am especially interested in students opinions of Lawrinson, Flint and Brewster Hall. Thanks so much for any input.

They are not all split doubles but many of them are. My daughter is in Haven. They place you according to when your housing contract is sent in so if you have been admitted and know you are going, the earlier you send in your deposit, the better location you’ll get, but also likely to be a split double as they are common in the dorms with more desirable locations.

@NJFabFour How do you know that housing is basd on when you put your deposit in? I’m hoping it’s true, because D got in ED and I paid the deposit within the first hour after she was notified!

I though freshman live in living/ learning communities?

Amkngk, I don’t remember where I read it, maybe on the website? She should get a good location then if she sent it in right away. My D is actually in a mixed hall with upperclassmen and freshmen and it seems many of the freshmen in her hall also applied ED. It has a great location, very close to Marshall St and the Student Center. There are several dorms CathJR designated as freshmen only. They are on the other side of campus.

@NJFabFour Thanks. I’m an SU alum, so I’m familiar with the dorms and locations, but on the down side, I also have strong opinions of where I would NOT like to see D placed

@CathJR Living learning communities are optional. My kid is on the fence about the one related to her major since she has AP credit that exempts her from taking the class that the LLC takes at the dorm together. It may come down to which LLCs are in which dorms. Not sure when that announcement is made.

My S is considering the Wellness LC but would like the privacy of a split double. Does Flint Hall have split doubles?

Flint does not have split doubles, but remember that housing assignments are random, so unless she chooses an LLC where there are split doubles, there’s no guarantee that she’ll get one.
(My D is going through the same thing).
The SU housing site has floor plan layouts of all the dorms. I don’t think links are allowed here, but maybe:

thanks

Lawrinson is incredibly nice, smaller floors mean that they tend to be quieter and it is more of a community, also the showers are singular which is good for privacy. I am a big fan.

That is interesting. Thanks for the insider information.

i currently live in lawrinson and i have to say it is very nice, it has split doubles, singles, and triples. the bathrooms are new and not communal (boy/girl), there are about 6 bathrooms on each floor and you go in and your in a private bathroom w a shower, toilet, and sink all in one room and there has never been an instance where i’ve had to wait. i would have to say the worst things about Lawrinson are the fire alarms (30+ first semester), i didn’t think they would bother me but they really do. also lawrinson is pretty far from everything, 20 minute walks to some classes, marshall st, and sometimes 25 to some parties/tailgates. other than that i have no complaints about lawrinson

@NJFabFour Thanks for the information regarding getting the deposit in quickly.

@Amkngk Fellow alum here, and I, too, have very strong feelings about where DS should live (if he is accepted and decides to go there). There are certain dorms that are between Ostrom and Comstock Avenues that I would not want him to live in.

@msmith22277 I lived on the 16th floor of Lawrinson Hall back in the day and it sounds like there has been a major renovation. Individual bathrooms??? We used to have one bathroom per floor - if memory serves me correctly there were five showers, two urinals, and four toilet stalls. Are the “triples” the corner rooms, and are they split? Also, are there living/learning communities that are specific to Lawrinson?

My S is a freshman and lives in Shaw as part of the engineering learning community. They also have the groups of individual bathrooms at the end of the hall rather than the old style communal bathroom. My understanding is that any dorm that has had a recent renovation has these bathrooms.

@MSMDAD i am pretty sure that the only freshmen dorms that have still have communal bathrooms are bbb and day, but i could be wrong, and i believe they will be renovated very soon. The corner rooms are split doubles, but they are spilt differently so that there is a column in the middle where the closet is. i believe there is a tour on youtube of one if you search lawrinson hall dorm or something. and not every floor has a triple but a lot of them have converted the floor lounge into a triple-this room is not completely split, it is kind of like an open double with one split room attached, most floors don’t have a common room due to the triple which is a con; but in my opinion the setup of lawrinson makes it very easy to bond with your floor and become very close even w/o the common area. and for the learning communities i don’t believe there are many in this building-i think there may be a lgbt floor but again i’m not positive.

Does Haven have private bathrooms or one large shared bathroom?

Which buildings are between Ostrom and Comstock? Is it a safety issue?

Is it possible to select your dorm and the room/floor?

Can anyone tell me what the honors dorm is like? Any information would be helpful. Room type, bathrooms etc…

@Missonimom, Haven has communal bathrooms, I’m not sure if there are any rooms with private baths. There are many dorms and Greek houses along Comstock. It is safe but there have been some non-university-related community incidents nearby. My D feels quite safe on-campus but exercises good judgement and uses the buddy system if it is late. @mommabear67, it is not possible to select your dorm or room but I believe you can select the type of room and choose to select a learning community.
