I am conflicted about whether I should apply for regular or early decision for SU College of Arts & Sciences. It’s kind of a reach school for me, as my gpa is low. I had some family issues my sophomore year and got a lot of Cs that year. My math classes are also my weakness and kill me.
ACT: Just took September ACT yesterday, waiting on my score.
My course load is all honors classes junior/senior year besides my math classes which are just standard. I also took an AP last year and am taking one this year. My school offers only 10 AP classes and I go to a very small school with only 106 kids in my grade.
What I dont know is if I should try to raise my GPA a little more before I send in my application, or apply early decision with my current grades because they will see SU is my first choice.
If it’s affordable then I’d say you’d be smart to go ED. The benefits of going ED totally outweigh raising your GPA a little. Then if you don’t get in ED you can send in your first semester grades.
I really think that this is out of reach for you and perhaps you’d be wasting your ED on a school you can’t get into.
Both your SAT and GPA are low, it’s not like you have “lopsided” stats, etc.
I would ignore what @soze said and apply early decision. I am currently an SU student and know unhooked applicants with worse stats who were accepted RD. I would recommend taking the SAT again though just to help improve your chances.
@seniorclass2017 I’ve heard of several people being accepted with gpa’s around 2.5 and SAT’s lower than 1600… Also the fact that you are applying to arts and sciences also improves your chances as it is one of the less competive schools (unless your major is one of the joint programs with Maxwell).
My S is very much interested in SU and we are also considering ED to improve his chances of being accepted. He does have lopsided stats - 79.6 GPA and a 29 ACT. He is interested in the sports management program which seems to be in its own school - not sure I am correct about this. I have heard it’s less competitive getting into the arts and sciences school. What’s the story with transferring from A&S to the sports management school or even the business school or Newhouse? I should mention he has ADHD and has a 504 plan. Should he disclose this prior to applying? Will he go into another applicant pool which may be smaller? I’ve heard mixed reports on this. TIA!
@scout07 The sports management program is in its own school. As far as transferring into that program, I’m not sure how difficult that is, however it is one of the less competitive programs to be admitted to during the regular application process. Whitman(the business school) is difficult to transfer in to and will require a very high GPA, while Newhouse is EXTREMELY difficult to internally transfer to. As far as disclosing that your son has ADHD I would definitely do it, it may help give an explanation for his gpa.
