Syracuse - Financial Aid

D just accepted - looking for info on financial aid - thanks

I’m just finishing up my first semester here. I’m receiving a $12,000/year scholarship from Syracuse, in addition to about $14,000 in grant money from the university. With government and state aid, I get enough help to pay for tuition and only have to worry about room, board and other fees.

Of course, my FAFSA EFC is only 846 but I’m not complaining (although my Dad is!). I’ll walk out of college with between 20K-30K in debt.

It’s definitely not the best, but it was enough for me to come here without too much financial worry.

out of state? we are from California. thanks and happy holidays. I hope you are enjoying S even with the awful weather?

Syracuse is private so it doesn’t matter if you’re OOS.

I do think the 95% of need met claim is interesting considering that VF sure didn’t get that.

That suggests to me that the school has a lot of kids with highish EFCs so meeting or “near meeting” need is not difficult with some merit and/or a student loan.

I’m guessing he came though if he’s anticipating graduating with less than $30K in debt. SU’s COA is a tad over $50K/year now. He got $26K in institutional aid, probably $4500 or so in Pell, around $4K in state aid, and likely got other federal help in the form of SEOG, loans, and work study. That could quickly add up to over 90% of COA, and Syracuse is fairly generous with estimating expenses.

True about the state aid…I didn’t see that. State aid isn’t available for the non-NY students.

Without Pell and state aid, I wonder if a bigger grant would have been given.

Sorry, I should have posted my total award. It’s around 44K, with the total expenses being calculated at around 52K.

It’s important to note that my CSS gives a slightly different financial picture than my FAFSA (divorced parents, Dad makes 140K a year before taxes), but still. That’s basically the only income for two households since my Mom stays at home.

They met around 85% of my federal aid, but it was probably closer to 90%-95% with the institutional method.

Another side note: my original package was lackluster. We called, and got an additional 9K in grant money. However, this probably isn’t a typical scenario. They completely messed up their calculations the first time.
