Syracuse? Ithaca? Enough need based aid?

I'm interested in both schools,I know I'd probably get into Ithaca, maybe Syracuse. The problem is I can't afford either if they don't offer substantial aid. Anybody have good experiences? I'm a junior, GPA 3.3-3.4, SAT 1870,EFC about $10,000.I am interested in journalism or travel writing.

Based on awards made to kids I know over the past 2 years, Ithaca will likely be more affordable but neither will give you substantial need based aid for the balance of the COA. But offers can differ alot from year to year, and I think you should apply to both and see what happens. Don’t fall in love with either, and make sure you apply to some public schools for financial safety!

Yes, you should have at least one financial safety, maybe more. Another suggestion is private colleges a notch or so down, in selectivity, from S and I. Good luck.

Search for poster hyperjulie, she goes to Ithica and has had aid issues. Bottom line is neither of these schools is likely to be generous if you have a low EFC and are not at the very top of their pools stats wise.

Good advise, thanks. I will have to apply to in-state schools (NY)as a financial safety. I am definitely having trouble finding something in-between price wise and with a good journalism/writing program, if anyone has any suggestions.

Ithaca College also determines need based aid off of academics, like Boston University does.

^^but Ithaca does give merit aid without applying for FA (unlike Boston University in most cases)…

it’s tough to find a middle ground college for journalism. Syracuse and
ithaca are great schools for that but I doubt they will be affordable. Out
of state will probably be even more difficult. Probably the suny’s or cuny’s
(Hunter college?) are your best bet. Have you checked out the
[Society of Professional Journalists](http://www.spj.org)

SUNY Oswego and Albany and one of the P’s, maybe Plattsburgh, have journalism. I think. You might look at UB too - they don’t have an actual journalism major but seem to have alot of media and writing programs and courses.

Also, SU and Ithaca both have articulation agreements with various CC’s and I believe both will offer scholarships to transfer students. It could be a good way to get the benefit of their program without breaking the bank for the gen ed years.

Thanks again for all the info. Some of the out of states seem to have good departments too, like Umass Amherst, but again, probably won’t be in my price range.
I hope I get in to Albany, isn’t Oswego in the middle of nowhere?

I think Albany would offer you so many opporunities, even if the school doesnt have a great program, you can make your own. Many internship opportunities in state capital. Good luck. Try hard to get into Honors program (this goes for Hunter too). I don’t know if Hunter has dorms, many CuNY campuses are in process of getting them and Honors students get first dibs (as far as I know).

I think that if you are admitted to the Park School you have a much better chance at getting merit aid. You might want to email admissions to check this, but that is my observation.
