I got into both Syracuse Newhouse and NYU journalism programs, but I can’t decide to which one I should go. Syracuse is giving me a full ride merit scholarship, and I was invited to do a honors program as well if I choose to go. NYU didn’t even offer me my financial aid yet, but it has the benefit of the large city setting. Any ideas?
Newhouse all the way. The Newhouse network is for real. The graduates turned out by the program are uniformly impressive. The professors all have real world experience, the curriculum is hands-on, internships abound, and you are connected with both faculty and student mentors from day one. Newhouse is on the cutting edge and will prepare you to do journalism in the digital age (and whatever new development may be just around the corner). Add in the fact that Newhouse has a semester in NYC program (http://suinnycgiving.syr.edu/learning-in-nyc/newhouse-in-nyc/) a large portion of its alumni base works in NYC, and that you are receiving a full ride to Newhouse versus potentially going hundreds of thousands in debt to attend NYU…
Former newswriter and TV news producer here. Absolutely Syracuse. It’s one of the finest journalism programs in the country, it has amazing connections and opportunities for its grads. The fact that you’ll be an honors student with a free ride will look very, very impressive on your resume. Don’t pass up this great chance!
Newhouse!
I agree, Newhouse is great for communication and with the big scholarship and honors program IMO it is a no-brainer unless NYU comes up with a ton of $.
Even if the same from a financial perspective, I 'd think Newhouse would be the better option. I hear many complaints about NYU because it lacks a contained campus so some students feel like it is hard to have a traditional college experience there-hard to make friends and establish a peer group-especially for those who are not fairly local.
I would be shocked if anyone here recommended anything other than Syracuse–Newhouse. You have been accepted to two excellent schools, but on top of that achievement, Syracuse has offered you outstanding funding. Take it.
