I have an impressive resume and a good two year internship in journalism with a 3.8 GPA, but I am scared my SAT scores are too low. Any opinions?

Is your 3.8 weighted or unweighted? 1920 should be enough for Newhouse. What exactly do you mean by an “impressive resume” and a “two year internship?” An internship at the Washington post compared to one at a local newspaper are very different things.

Sorry, *1980

Since this question was posted I received my official gpa which is a UW 3.895 and weighted is above a 4.0.

As for my resume I’ve been on newspaper for four years and I am Editor this year. I know basically anyone applying to Newhouse is on newspaper but ours is nationally ranked and has a staff of 82 students plus online so I am hoping it sets my position apart.

I am involved in a number of leadership organizations and community service organizations including Boy Scouts of America Explorers Club (president), National Technical Honor Society (historian), Leadership Council ect.

For the past 2 years I’ve worked writing for the SBISD Communications Dpt. I know it is a local publication but the kind of work I do is not intern work; all of my duties consists of purely writing, interviewing, website designing, posting, and editing other full time employee’s writing. I am frequently published in The Houston Chronicle, The SBISD School Zone, and The Memorial Examiner.

I also have earned multiple journalism specific awards for my writing and editing–locally, regionally, and nationally.

I feel confident about my application but I am terrified that it isn’t enough.

Any thoughts?

I think it’ll come down to your test scores and essays. Your GPA is good but it also depends on how hard your courses were and how hard your school is. Also “nationally ranked”…are you guys Pacemaker? (Just curious because people have differing opinions on what “nationally ranked” is).

For the most part things look good, though. Good luck!i

I just graduated from Newhouse in May. I had a 1250 SAT(only had 1600 back then), and a 29 or 30 ACT and had around a 90 GPA in high school. I remember my roommate had around a 1100 SAT and she was accepted to Newhouse too. I really think you’re fine, we both did much less than you and so did many of our Newhouse friends.

Thank you for all of the replies! I was accepted a few weeks ago and got a scholarship from Newhouse! Can’t wait for school to start

I think you should make it. You have a really really good chance to make it.
chance me?
