Hi. I've applied for the Television-Radio-Film graduate program at Syracuse University (Newhouse) and the Television Production graduate program at Boston University (College of Communication).

Haven't received any results so far, but I really don't know which one is better. Newhouse seems to have great reputation (at least the undergraduate program), but BU has the LA semester, which sounds great.

I'm interested in being an executive or producing/writing for tv. Hope graduate school helps me find the right path and work opportunities.

Does anyone have an opinion on this? Or have you attended one of these programs and can tell me about your experience? I'm completely lost, any thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks so much!!

I was just admitted to the MA in TV-Radio-Film at Syracuse and the MS in Television Production at Boston U…I was admitted to BU College of Comm undergrad, but couldn’t afford it. Honestly, I was not impressed upon visiting Boston University’s School. Syracuse’s Newhouse has three buildings whereas BU’s is a coverted car sale lot. Howard Stern, a BU alumn, offered millions to build a new building, but BU rejected his offer. In addition, the amount of classes offered at Newhouse as opposed to BU is vast. To BU’s credit, I’ll say they have the semester in LA as well as internship opportunities…but Newhouse has weeks in LA and NY used to network. I know several people in movies and tv…so perhaps it’s best to know people within the industry, regardless of which school you choose. I am leaning towards Newhouse personally, though I am waiting for more financial information. Hit me at apalomba87@gmail.com…we may even be classmates.

Wow, thank you SO much for the reply! I’ll definitely email you, we really may be classmates! I was admitted to the TRF program in Syracuse but haven’t yet received the Boston letter (I live in another continent, so that should take a while). I can say I’m leaning towards Syracuse, although I don’t yet know if I was admitted to Boston. I visited Syracuse, met with chair Michael Schoonmaker and really liked the buildings (even though I’m very scared about the cold weather). I didn’t visit Boston, but it seems a more interesting city (better weather, but more expensive). You mentioned a key thing to me: Syracuse classes sound more vast on paper, whilst Boston’s look a bit generic, less flexible. As I’m looking from afar, I’m afraid to judge. Plus, I’m afraid to choose Boston betting on 3 months in LA, which could be really helpful or not.

Not to eavesdrop, but I got into the TRF graduate program at Syracuse too, and applied to but did not get accepted by the TV Production MS at Boston University. I’m waiting on another school but excited about getting into Syracuse (but also wondering if it would be the best choice). Anyway, hi there.

What’s the other school you are waiting on? I looked at Boston University and visited there. I was told by an administrator that BU students didn’t do well in NYC, that the internships in Boston are scarce, and that the LA program is their true source of pride. Newhouse alumni in NYC are incredible, and there is a huge network in LA. Hit me at apalomba87@gmail.com

Hey i also have the same dilemma, I got accepted to both BU school of communication and Syracuse Newhouse. I love the city of Boston and i like that fact that it’s so busy and has all these things to do; however from what i’ve heard Newhouse is a better institution.
I’ve also heard that Syracuse has a close community but i was wondering if it’s the same for BU? What do you think is more important, a social life or a good eduction?

I just got into newhouse and BU too, as well as brooklyn and I can’t figure out which. Have you decided? Would love to get your opinion and maybe talk via email. I am soo stressed about this.
