Syracuse Newhouse TRF vs. Emerson College Film

Hello all!

After all the stressful months, I have been gratefully accepted to amazing schools. As of now, my dream is to pursue a career in the film industry, but with an emphasis in Cinematography.

Currently, my top two choices consist of Syracuse Newhouse School for Television-Radio-Film and Emerson College for Cinematography/Videography.

Syracuse already released their FA info and it's not exactly the best option in terms of money. Emerson College didn't offer me any scholarships, so it would cost me nearly full tuition to attend there. This basically dwindles down to pros and cons.

I have NOT visited both schools as I live in California. If anyone can give me advice or some info on the atmosphere for both Syracuse and Emerson, I would greatly appreciate it.

although both newhouse and emerson are highly respected film programs, they differ greatly. as it is offered through the communications school (newhouse), the trf major is very commercial oriented, teaching you much about hollywood and the workings of the film industry. they do however have their students produce work and it is definitely hands on. emerson is much more technical and artistically oriented, and sounds like a better fit for someone who wants to be involved in cinematography. while emerson is regarded as one of the best film programs in the nation, newhouse is known for its industry connections, and many graduates are successful studio executives and producers. i should note that syracuse does have a more art-oriented conservatory-style school: VPA which is probably more comparable to emerson in the focus on the artistic and the technical. so for a cinematographer, judging solely on the basis of the film program, i would say to go with emerson. however, there are a lot of other factors to consider. syracuse’s campus looks just like any college movie you’ve seen. big buldings, grass, kids throwing frisbees. it is a great atmosphere with a great class size. i dont like sports but their really big there, and you can really get into school spirit and a true college experience. emerson’s campus consists of a few buildings in the middle of boston, and although boston is home to plenty of schools, emerson has a much weaker school atmosphere, its more of a conservatory than a typical college. however, being that you are from california (although i dont know where), you will be VERY cold at syracuse during the winter months. also probably from like november to march it can be really cold upstate compared to emerson. i hope this helps. i dont really know what’s most important to you (college experience, film program), but i hope you find the best fit for you.
