Hey guys, I would really appreciate it if someone would be able to give me the breakdown on these two schools and help me in my decision. I am currently a freshman at another NY state school, but I am transferring in the fall.

Up until yesterday, I was set on attending Syracuse university with the hopes of graduating from the Newhouse school of communications. I want to become a talent agent/manger in the entertainment industry, and I know Newhouse would be great for that. They also have great internship placement and alumni connections upon graduation. I also know the social aspect of Syracuse is very fun. In addition, if I never get into Newhouse (it's top 3 in the nation for communications) then I would graduate with liberal arts, which is still good from there I think. The downside is that it's private and costs more than 50k a year. After what my parents can afford, I'll owe about 100k in students loans.

I just recently got into binghamton. Binghamton is the ivy league of NY state schools, great education for the money, but kind of lacks a communication aspect. Also, if I save all that money by going here, I'll have the option of law school.

Can you guys tell me what you think in terms of tuition, education, Newhouse, and employment after graduation?

You’ll probably get a lot of support for Syracuse in this thread, but I think there are good reasons. Syracuse is a big name school, and I think that will be super helpful Newhouse or not. If you graduate and go to some other corner of the country, Binghamton is not a very big name, and is less likely to be recognized. Syracuse has a national presence, so if you ended up in Los Angeles, they’ll know Syracuse. Then when you factor in the Newhouse angle, SU seems to be head and shoulders above Binghamton. There is no disrespect to BU. This is just an opinion.

Are you accepted to Newhouse? I have heard that SU advises not coming to SU with the intention of transferring into Newhouse as it is not very likely unless you are accepted as a freshman. 100k is a big chunk of debt. Is Binghamton in-state tuition for you? While it may not have the name recognition of Syracuse, the smaller program may allow you more personal attention and from our visit there, they have many connections for internships in NYC. Are you comfortable with large debt and being a transfer student at a very large university? Have you had any personal conversations with professors and students in communications at either school? Or are you deciding on reputation alone?

Even if Binghamton is OOS, it likely will be cheaper than Syracuse, excluding any FA…
Bing out of state will run approximately $30K per year with $1300 increases each of the next few years per State Assembly ( vs. $300 in-state increases)

It’s more of a what more do you get for more money? Syracuse has two offices in NYC and one of them hosts a “study away” program. There are a lot of alumni there because of their Broadcast program and the business program. The same this is true for LA, and I’ve heard they have a study away in DC too.

Also, you should check into what each school offers non-academic wise too. Professional programs and networking clubs etc. I’ve heard both are good.

It’s like buying shoes, if you want the recognized name with more feature for more money, go SU. If you’d rather be frugal and functional go Binghamton.

NYRCUP94 You answered your own question “They also have great internship placement and alumni connections upon graduation”.now you must crunch the numbers also if it means anything Binghampton is a formitable university. My W cousin graduated from there and is now head of Neuro Surgery at a metropolital hospital. My advice weigh it all and choose …good luck

Do you want to go to a school with loads of school spirit? Do you want a school that is outstanding for your field? Do you want a college experience with other students excited about learning? That is one school. Do you want a school that is a best buy? Do you want to be surrounded by students wanting cheap credits and an efficient education? Do you want to be with the B students from Regents English who moaned audibly when the teacher announced that they would have to read a book? That is the other school. You guess.

^^^ Your estimation of the caliber of student who attends Binghamton is quite inaccurate.
If one compares admission data, the “average” SAT/ACT scores is quite a bit higher at Binghamton.

I don’t know of any Regents level kids admitted to Binghamton.

Don’t underestimate the 100k debt and how significant those payments will be after graduation.

I agree samiamy even though I am a shill for Syracuse and love SU. that was a low blow from Insidelane It is’nt fair to judge by numbers and I do believe Syracuse has a great networking grid but lately alot of SU folks are getting a little uppidy and should pull the reins in.Yes Syracuse is a well renowned school with great prestige but everything is relative. How do you feel if a Princeton alum or student snubbed their nose at Syracuse . Let’s all just get along
