What are the pros and cons of both (for a future pre-med, by the way).

Which do you prefer?

Most importantly, which is harder to get into, do you think?

Syracuse is harder to get into.

Ithaca College: SAT mid 50% = 1070-1280, acceptance rate of 69%

'Cuse has SAT range of 1120-1330, & acceptance rate of 51%.

Besides stats, there is a culture difference since Syracuse is urban and Ithaca College is located in a small, somewhat rural town.

Ithaca is, however, in a gorgeous, waterfall filled, very intellectual small city whereas Syracuse is in... well, Syracuse.

We visited both years ago with my S#1. He was interested in Communications - strong in both schools. He chose Syracuse and was very happy with his choice -it was perfect for him. He now works in NYC and has a huge network of Orangepersons as friends....

Syracuse: Pro - diversity in programs - you can study almost anything there, university (not college), big time sports, school spirit, nice compact campus, strong alumni network
Con - city of Syracuse, weather

Ithaca: Pro - strong in some areas (music, communications), smaller, pretty campus, nice college town (but you are always playing second fiddle to Big Red)
Con - slightly less diverse, weather

Hope this helps

oh, don't worry about weather, haha - I come from central Maine ;)

hwo competitive are each of the schools?

I think size is a big factor in these two schools. I went to Syracuse and know people who went to Ithaca. At Ithaca, figure that you will know everyone. Syracuse is larger and you will constantly be meeting new people.....depends if you enjoy a larger or more intimate environment. My friend who went to Ithaca thought it was a lot like H.S. due to the size.

I recently spent a weekend at Ithaca with my friend and I can say the environment I was in was that of a "party school". Though I'm sure each person can find their own niche with people who share their priorities, there is definitely a large part of Ithaca which parties all the time and doesn't make school their first priority. I dunno about Syracuse.

Good luck deciding!

I have a bunch of friends at Syracuse and it's a pretty big party school with not a lot of enforcement. The DPS there are kind of a joke. But my close friend that goes to Ithaca says that theres more drug use than she expected.

Lily -- Your friend must have attended a pretty large high school. Ithaca College admits twice as many freshmen each year than there are in my kid's entire high school. It's all relative. (Ithaca has 6,100+ undergrads).

Ithaca is pretty big, and Syracuse is massive.

If you were looking into journalism, Syracuse has newhouse, so Syracuse would be the tippy-top-top (unless you were looking into Northwestern or Mizzou).

However, since you're going to be taking lots of life science courses, 'Cuse would probably be the better option. Ithaca is a very artsy school compared to 'Cuse.
