Syracuse or Northeastern? (Newhouse v. D'Amore Mckim)

Hey everyone. I have to make a fairly quick decision on this so your help is appreciated.

I was recently admitted to 2 amazing schools Syracuse and Northeastern.
At Syracuse i was admitted to Newhouse as an advertising major which was shocking to me bc i didnt think I would get in considering how competitive it is.At Northeastern I was accepted as a business/comms combined major and am super siked.

Northeastern Pros: Boston, CO-OP (good for finding job after school), the major is 100% perfect i love every class i would be taking.

Northeastern Cons: people say there isnt really a sense of community on campus, im not allowed to house on campus so i would have to find an apartment, social scene is mostly just boston and would be expensive

Syracuse Pros: Newhouse is one of the top schools in the country and is highly renowned, they have a lot of school spirt and theres always something going on on campus, alumni connections are insane ( they call it the Newhouse Mafia for a reason), social scene is based on campus, i am legacy

Syracuse Cons: the city of syracuse isnt the safest and is kinda run down (but the campus is gorgeous), housing is part of the university but is off campus (like a 5 minute shuttle ride), the major, while i think i would like it, is kinda specific and northeasterns is just so perfect.

both have a music industry minor which is the field i want to work in. both have amazing study abroad programs. syracuse is likely to be a bit cheaper but that doesnt matter. I just want to go to the school that gives me the most oppurtunity and will be fun. idk what to do…

Hi, I can’t speak to Syracuse, but my son just finished his freshman year at Northeastern. On the NU Parents Facebook page there are many sublets available with other NU students. Lightview is a new building that is very close to campus and many students share apartments in the Mission Hill area. This past year was atypical due to the pandemic, but there should be more in person clubs and parties next year. If you like sports, there are intramural sports. There is some Greek life if you want it, but no pressure if you don’t. My son has found the students very nice and friendly. Although the campus is in a city, it is self-contained with grassy areas and trees, Adirondack chairs and fire pits. Many students put out hammocks in nice weather. There are turf fields and tennis courts. Lots to do in Boston.

Good luck with your choice!

thank you this helped!

SU is not Syracuse - meaning, you’re not in the bad parts. The campus area is fine.

Not sure why housing is 5 minutes away- it must be South Campus apartments you are talking about. They have dorms on campus too.

Given the major, do you have any cheaper options or are you getting aid?

SU is great for advertising - but the field is really low paying - so if you have a cheaper option, even as an SU alum, I’d suggest alternatives.

i am talking about south campus, im a transfer so i have to stay there.
im not thrilled about being an advertising major, but given the fact that i want to work in the music industry on the business side, newhouse has a ton of connenctions. I also have the option of doing marketing in whitman which would probaly hep with the better paying job but i dont really like the cirriculm. SU gave me a 10k scholarship

At Northeastern the curriculum is perfectly suited to the things I actually want to study and cut out the things I dont, but i didnt receive any aid from NEU and would have to get an apartment since they dont have housing for transfers… plus boston is really expensive. however during co-op ( 1 or 2 6month periods idk yet) i wouldnt be paying tuition bc i would be working so It might even out a bit more.

Actually NEU sounds better. But other schools are still taking transfers. I’d disagree with the connections btw. Yes the name means something but if you are aggressive you will make those connections on your own.

Both great choices. The co ops are really great. But honestly find your in state school or merit schools like UCF, Bama or South Carolina.

Music how bout Belmont or MTSU

u have two great options. Are they worth at Syracuse $70k a year after $10k. No

Sorry. I’d prob take NEU but both are great.

Most my fellow Newhouse students from 30 years ago are not in major related jobs. Yet many are high profile broadcasters. But there is similar at less expensive schools as well. Sorry to bring that up but you are spending an insane amount for a degree where starting salaries are minuscule.

Sorry I know it’s not answering your question.

I would see what type of co ops NU is getting. If they are meaty then I’d go there. Why ? Internship/work experience is the top reason you’ll get hired.

That said it bothers me the over pay and either going into debt or impacting your folks so if there’s still time you can save a lot of $$ and get the same result.

ive already looked at alot of the schools you mentioned and ruled them out early this year. Im from NY so I want to stay up north more. My state schools, while they have some amazing programs, they have never really spoken to me. the ones that have degrees or minors in Music Business dont have good business/Comms programs and the ones with the good business/Comms dont have connections to the industry. NU has really great coop connections to big companies like spotify, apple and nike. And you can do these coops anywhere in the world. im going to try to appeal my aid and see if i can get anything from them. thank you so much for your help!

The co op thing is amazing if they are legit. Ask SU for outcomes…jobs and salaries. A lot of the Newhouse effect is…well…advertising
Good luck.

Btw it’s an interconnected world so what state you attend school in doesn’t matter. Companies hire today via hirevue. Companies back ends are located anywhere…most notably south. Lots of NY and CA agencies have headed south because that’s where their clients are…cities like Nashville and Atlanta.

Good luck to you.

thanks!
