Not to sound negative, but I don’t think the financial aid page on MySlice necessarily means anything. A lot of schools ask for more financial aid information/add things to their portals without any regard to the applicant’s decision.
A little contact and information goes a long way. Syracuse has to know how stressful this process can be for the kids applying there. The little notes notes of encouragement and humorous empathy we received regularly from other schools made a big difference. Since Syracuse doesn’t offer an EA application option, they force everyone who is not 100 percent sure about the school into RD and an extended wait, with almost total radio silence.
But I will shut up now. I know this isn’t a forum for venting and it is better for everyone here to stay upbeat. I would be lying, though, if I said this process wasn’t affecting my family’s collective enthusiasm for the school.
I don’t know your guys’ application process was with Syracuse, but mine was great. My regional counselor would always check up on me and see if everything is good from my side. I also applied for one of the theatre programs, and since its such a small group, I’ve been in constant contact with them too and they are always 100% friendly.
I know waiting is hard, but thats just part of the process. It’ll all be over soon - starting this Friday.
@maffy66 We are still waiting to hear from 7 schools so the wait from Syracuse doesn’t turn us off. I’d say my D is more turned off by the 2 schools that deferred her during the EA round since they didn’t instantly want her. This is my first kid to go through this college application process. It is a great study in psychology!
Not to sound like an old man, but in the day most schools didn’t answer until mid-late March. That was the norm, you applied to college and you found out in March. The whole EA thing sort of distorts/stresses the process. It would be less stressful if it was just ED and RD. EA does not have a lot of purpose.
We are like @MrazFan100, still waiting for five schools. We really don’t feel like SU is dragging their feet.
I am waiting to hear from 5 so I completely agree with this!
Guys, I’m still waiting to hear from 14 schools, I feel this completely.
agreed! When I applied it was via a paper app with no “website to check status” lol You submitted and hope it didn’t go into a vortex lol
I don’t think portal updates have to do with anything other than a system wide general update in anticipation of the upcoming decisions.
It’s very tough waiting, but the decision dates are in late March for lots of schools. It’s hardly unusual or negligent.
Yes, same change others have been reporting.
I, too, sort of miss the days when you got an envelope in the mail. One moment of joy or disappointment, and you could move on. These portal changes, quirks, and glitches make for months of anxiety.
@brewsty they send you an email
@limerick1913 so funny and so true! One of D’s schools does not have a portal, and it feels like the dark ages, lol.
@limerick1913 Who doesn’t have a portal?! My D is kind of disappointed that none of her decisions are coming through the mail the old fashioned way. I guess this is how she envisioned it would work from movies or something. Funny.
just noticed that they posted their new tuition schedule (they may have been there for awhile, but just saw) – base tuition went up over 10% from 2017/18 to 2018/19-- now just over $50k…adding in the room, board and fees + transportation, supplies, typical travel (which they underestimate - e.g., transportation of $600/yr - lol)… anyway, all in costs at SU will exceed $70k/yr…mind boggling. For those of you budgeting…with general increases each year - looking at at $300k +/- for 4-yr education at SU.
@A1A1A1 this seems to be the going rate at private schools in NY, NJ, CT, MA etc. Another school my S is considering is $73K…after all they are for profit institutions.
No, schools like syracuse are non profits. http://giving.syr.edu/giving-to-su/501c3-status/
Loyola University Chicago has a strong BA in Theatre Performance with an Acting track. You can pair it with a Musical Theatre certificate. They have rolling admission and no audition. The faculty is very connected.
Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY has a BA with BFA option their Sophomore Year. Highly decorated faculty and less than 20 miles from the city. Rolling admission. No audition until Spring of their freshman year for the BFA track.
Ooops…wrong thread!
While SU is great school, campus, facilities, etc – absent a miracle merit #, paying (i.e., borrowing) an additional $20k-$30k a YEAR than solid state schools like Penn St, Indiana, Florida is going to be tough to justify on our end.
