April 15th is own the dome and 16th is spring reception. They are both for admitted students only, to basically ‘Sell’ the college and get kids psyched. At UConn that all takes place for admitted students on the 14th. I just can’t do both in one weekend. Too much.
No need to put sell in quotation marks. That is exactly what they are doing - selling the school to the check writing parents.
@byadg123 Ha! Really, though, selling it to the kids so they badger their check-writing parents. My daughter has applied, Maxwell School, and we are pretty confident she’ll get in. Somehow we missed the hike of 5500 for next year. We won’t receive aid, and with merit capping around 25,000 for the very, very select few, we let her know it probably won’t happen for her (on our end). She gets it, which certainly makes our job easier.
5500 hike for next year? Merit capping at $25,000 only for a select few. Wow. Thanks for heads up. I want to show this info to my daughter. Do you have any links you can share with this?
5500??? I missed that too. I already can’t afford it, especially since my kid is amazing but her 1200 SAT was a miracle. Now I really hope that she gets into one of her desired state schools. She’s in her safety but if that’s her only choice she’ll probably end up at Marist where her net is under $30 and we’ve begged for more. NC State schools would be under $20. Syracuse…just a little more.
Am I a bad parent for hoping that she doesn’t get in?
@byadg123 no you’re not a bad parent! Doing what you can to provide your child with a solid but affordable education. NC state schools are amazing, not bad options!
We have had to say no to schools DS was admitted to because the aid packages just didn’t come close to 2-3 others on the list. I suspect Syracuse will be another such school. It’s a sad reality to middle and upper middle class families…privates just don’t seem to appreciate our kids.
If D wanted to study accounting or computer science then I wouldn’t feel bad at all if she has to go to another school - she’ll learn it just fine at NCState. The trouble is that she wants to go to Newhouse and we don’t have equivalent programs.
D’s top 3 schools are Syracuse, UConn and Temple. It’s going to all come down to merit aid. We find out Friday if she got a Portfolio scholarship from Temple. UConn we won’t know about aid until mid March. Syracuse it will be end of March when they deliver admission decisions. This waiting is killing us.
Link to the article I found. Sorry, the article says 5060. I guess I morphed that into 5500! It’s the standard hike plus 3300. (Keeping in mind that the following three years will only go up from there.)
Someone else asked in the forum if they were going to increase merit opportunities to offset the increase in tuition. That sent me on the hunt to get more information.
We saved for our in-state flagship (MA), and we’ve told our kids that that’s our goal for cost. If they get into a better school, we will adjust upward somewhat. But when we went to the Orange Preview and attended the financial aid presentation last summer, they spelled out the percentages that get different amounts of aid, with 25,000 being for the top teeny percent. That’s not our daughter. When we left, we let her know that it probably wasn’t going to work out, and she’s cool with it. No loans is the goal. Her comment, which was very insightful, was that she wished they gave out less swag and food at the Orange Preview and just made tuition cheaper. Exactly.
Syracuse’s link:
@byadg123 When our kids were younger we lived in NC and were super excited to have access to the NC public university system. Then we moved back to MA for a job opportunity…
Most informative. Thanks
@JerseyMom2022 - what major? We looked at Temple - a portfolio scholarship would be very impressive. My D wants Graphic Design and likes the program at Newhouse because it doesn’t require a portfolio! The art classes at our HS are weak for building one.
@mistreshijas - thanks for the legwork. Yes, it’s great to have Chapel Hill and State. As safeties go, App is a fine option.
might want to check your portals. Someone from my school in CT said they were accepted today.
Top merit is full tuition…and Cuse do give them out…although I am not sure how many.
@byadg123 she is applying with a portfolio as a visual arts major. All the programs she applied to required a portfolio.
@mistreshijas thank you for the link. It made me want to throw up. I knew it was expensive but wow. My D has a decent chance of acceptance but there is NFW it will work for us without significant merit.
I’ve been in the portal a lot lately to sort out the needed financial aid paperwork and it specifically states that admissions will come by email, not on the portal. Takes the edge off the constant checking.
Good luck to all of you and your students!
@JerseyMom2022 good luck to your D! My H and I both went there for Visual Arts! I can’t get over how beautiful the new buildings and art studios are. A lot has changed in 30 years, not only the price!
